Those who remember Silversun Pickups as a scrappy indie act plying its trade across Silver Lake dives might want to clear some space on their record shelf. The quartet is prepping a quintessential mid-career-rock-titan release: a box set of all its decade's worth of singles. "The Singles Collection" will feature six 7-inch records with 12 of the band's formal singles (or just 11 if you opt for the digital version). The collection spans selections from the debut EP, 2005's local favorite "Pikul," up through its three full-length LP's, including 2012's "Neck of the Woods.

The Silversun Pickups are the local indie embodiment of the famous quote from the Irish writer Samuel Beckett: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." Bands should be so lucky to experience such crushing defeats: The heroes of the Silver Lake scene, the fiery but focused Silversun Pickups are competing against acts including MGMT, the Ting Tings, the Zac Brown Band and R&B mistress Keri Hilson for the best new artist prize at this year's Grammy Awards ceremony, set to take place next Sunday in L.A. It's recognition that's been a long time coming.

Silver Lake's Silversun Pickups are now in the same league as superstars Miley Cyrus, Rascal Flatts and Lady GaGa -- or at least in the neighborhood. The independent rock quartet has scored its first-ever top-10 album, landing at No. 7 with "Swoon," which places the fuzzy guitar rockers between Jadakiss and Lady GaGa on the U.S. pop chart. It just goes to show what a little promotion can do.

The Silversun Pickups are moving on up, and they're taking their friends and fans with them. The L.A.-based quartet has outgrown the small Silver Lake rock clubs where the group has been a staple for more than six years, selling out the 2,200-capacity Wiltern well in advance of Saturday night's homecoming show. But the band is still very much a part of the close-knit musical community from which it arose.

Silversun Pickups "Swoon" Dangerbird Records * * * 1/2 Growth is a necessity in every corner of rock 'n' roll, even for local heroes not far removed from the fab dives of Silver Lake and Echo Park. But by the time the Silversun Pickups released their 2006 full-length debut, "Carnavas," they already had perfected their fuzzy sing-alongs for shoe-gazers, making pure indie rock as forceful as it was accessible. They were eager to please and exceptionally good at it.

In early September it was revealed that Jeff Castelaz was parting ways with Silver Lake's Dangerbird Records, the independent label he co-founded about 10 years ago. Today, Castelaz officially joins the ranks of the major label community, as Warner Music Group is set to unveil that Castelaz has been named the president of Elektra Records.  Castelaz at Dangerbird helped foster the careers of local artists such as the Silversun Pickups, Fitz...

Dangerbird Records co-founder Jeff Castelaz is leaving the Silver Lake-based indie label he's overseen since 2004. Home to more than 15 active artists, including Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora and Grammy-nominated rock act the Silversun Pickups, Dangerbird's day-to-day will now be run by Jenni Sperandeo, who joined the company in 2010 and served as the label's head of promotion. A press release states that Castelaz will focus on his management roster at Cast Management, which currently includes the Dropkick Murphys and record producers Tony Hoffer, Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Jacquire King.

The lowest moment of Richie Sambora's life was the night in 2008 when he was arrested for DUI with his then-10-year-old daughter Ava in the car. Only a year after the Bon Jovi guitarist had left rehab for alcohol and pill abuse, he was pulled over in Laguna Beach after police saw him weaving on the highway in his Hummer. They booked and released him, and the Laguna Beach police described him as "quiet and cooperative and he didn't cause any problems. " The arrest capped a brutal year of personal trials: his divorce to actress Heather Locklear was finalized, his new relationship with Denise Richards faltered and his father died of lung cancer.

Pretty soon, the only songs Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan might be able to play will be the collected works of Hank Williams Jr. and Ted Nugent, at least judging by a statement Dee Snider made Wednesday morning. After learning that Republican vice presidential hopeful Ryan had been warming up crowds with "We're Not Gonna Take It," the lead singer of Twisted Sister requested that the song be pulled from Ryan's playlist. This comes after Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello wrote an editorial denouncing Ryan after learning that the candidate was a Rage fan; and after L.A. band Silversun Pickups decried Ryan's campaign for using their "Panic Switch.

Great article by Kevin Bronson ("Bands on the Brink," Sept. 29). There is no way I could ever pretend that I don't depend on The Times to keep up with music trends. I have to hand it to you for hitting it on the head with your latest. Silversun Pickups, the Willowz, the 88 and 400 Blows are bands I've been screaming about for some time. It's great to see someone else singing their praises. JOE RUBALCABA Los Angeles

Luckily, Silversun Pickups, a sweetheart of the Silver Lake indie rock scene, allows locals to dodge the bullet of mindless allegiance by churning out a rather solid full-length debut, "Carnavas."
