An unexpected clamor for seats on a Simi Valley transit panel has led the City Council to expand the committee to allow more residents to participate. The Americans with Disabilities Act Paratransit Advisory Committee has been expanded from three to five members, with two additional residents serving as alternates. The panel reviews the city's policy on transit for disabled residents and makes recommendations to the City Council.

Simi Valley Transit has extended its curb-to-curb van service for disabled riders to include Saturdays. As with weekday service, vans on Saturdays will be provided from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for trips within the city limits. Bus fares are $1 and transportation requests must be made at least one day in advance. Saturday service is required under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, and is provided in conjunction with Simi Valley Transit's Dial-A-Ride service.

The Americans with Disabilities Act Paratransit Advisory Committee has scheduled its bimonthly meeting for Thursday at the Simi Valley Senior Citizens Center, 3900 Avenida Simi. The seven-member committee will discuss and review transit issues such as service, accessibility and safety that affect individuals with disabilities. For information on the meeting, which begins at 3 p.m., call Simi Valley Transit at 583-6464.

Simi Valley residents concerned about transit services for the disabled are being asked to apply for the city's transit advisory committee. In order to qualify, applicants must either be disabled or use the city's Dial-A-Ride bus service. The city is filling three vacancies on the five-member committee, which meets four times a year to review a range of transit service issues including policies, availability, accessibility, safety and training. The application deadline is Friday.
