A pop music critic's take on the music: Simon: Darken up! Normally I don't care when Simon Cowell condemns a would-be Idol's performance as "horrible," because usually there's some musical validity to what he says. But Tuesday night, when he dissed Jordin Sparks for doing exactly what a good singer ought to do -- communicate emotion -- he blew it big time.

Simon Cowell has regrets, but his baby son's not one. How that baby started off, well, that's another story. Cowell, of course, was caught in an affair last summer with now-girlfriend Lauren Silverman, who was still married to Cowell pal Andrew Silverman when little Eric-to-be was conceived. "I regret that part," Cowell tells the Mirror . "But then of course you have a baby and you look at the baby and you kinda go, 'This is what happened from it.' "In this situation you are not going to come out of this well because of the circumstances.

Simon Cowell just uncorked some of the most withering criticism of his career. But it wasn't directed at some hapless contestant on Fox's "The X Factor" -- this time, his ire was pointed at "The Voice," his main competition in televised singing shows. Cowell unloaded his scorn after NBC added a third night to "The Voice's" season premiere, which airs next Monday, Tuesday and now Wednesday. The latter date officially conflicts with "The X Factor's" season premiere, and Cowell is, shall we say, unhappy about it. "This is a cynical, cold-hearted, unprofessional way of doing business," he said to TMZ , citing a previous "gentlemen's agreement" that kept to the similar shows in different time slots.

Tom Ford and his longtime partner, Richard Buckley, have gotten married, the designer revealed at an event in London on Monday night.  "We are now married, which is nice," the 52-year-old told Vogue . "I know that was just made legal in the U.K., which is great; we were married in the States. " The two - who've been together for 27 years after first meeting at a 1986 fashion show when Ford was 25 - have a son, Alexander John Buckley Ford,  born in September 2012.  Having Alexander around has changed life in at least one big way for Ford, who said Monday night that he carries a cellphone only because there's an app that allows him to watch the boy sleeping.

This post has been updated. See below for details. Not so long ago, Simon Cowell was probably the most powerful man on American TV. His cranky, caustic judging had helped make "American Idol" an invincible No. 1 hit. As a producer, he makes "America's Got Talent" and similar shows that have long been top sellers around the world. He ranked No. 17 on Forbes' 2013 Celebrity 100 list, with estimated annual pay of $95 million, and famously predicted that his own "The X Factor" on Fox would hammer "Idol," the singing contest he left in a storm of publicity in 2010.

Simon Cowell is expecting a baby with New York socialite Lauren Silverman, the estranged wife of one of the talent-show judge's good friends - that according to several reports out Wednesday. Seems that as Lauren, 36, and her real-estate mogul husband Andrew Silverman grew apart, she and the 53-year-old "The X Factor" judge grew closer. Apparently much closer.  But it's not quite as scandalous as all that. "Lauren and Andrew have been unhappy in their marriage for some time, and their divorce has been in the works for a while," a source tells Us Weekly , which first reported the story.  Cowell told GQ magazine in 2011, when he was engaged to former fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy, that he'd ruled out fatherhood, even though it was something he'd always wanted.

The ratings are in, and it's time to ask: What went wrong with "X Factor"?  Season 3 of Simon Cowell's singing show got a jump-start on the fall season Wednesday night, but the numbers were pretty close to a disaster. An average of 6.2 million viewers tuned in to the one-hour premiere, good only for an anemic second behind CBS' "Big Brother" (6.7 million) -- and that's with ABC running a repeat of "Shark Tank" (3.6 million). In the key adults ages 18 to 49 demographic, Fox's "X Factor" lost more than one-fifth of its audience compared with last year.

“The X Factor” versus “The Voice” - can the two play nice in the prime-time sandbox next week? Apparently not. Simon Cowell seems to be rolling up the sleeves on that snug shirt of his - and he's ready for battle. During a conference call - which also included new judge (and supplier of “Give Your Heart a Break,” a.k.a. that song stuck in your head) Demi Lovato - with reporters on Thursday, Cowell didn't mince words when addressing NBC's decision to add another night of “The Voice.” A move, announced earlier this week, that would pit the the peacock's reality darling against Cowell's British import.

The Simon Cowell baby drama is in full swing, and we haven't had this much fun with rampant rumors since Tiger Woods was grabbing the headlines - and not for golf . Cowell, of course, has allegedly impregnated New York socialite Lauren Silverman, estranged wife of New York real estate guy Andrew Silverman. Although whether they were estranged at the point of conception is a matter of some debate, along with who knew what when . Andrew was originally being identified as a "close friend" of "The X Factor" judge, which made the betrayal sting that much more, but this week we learned from the New York Daily News that he was friends with Simon only because of Lauren, which is a whole 'nother scenario.

At what point in Season 2 of "The X Factor" did Simon Cowell realize it was time, yet again, to revise the already revised judges panel? "Day 1. " Cowell was of course joking when answering the question Thursday during the show's panel at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Beverly Hills.   "It's like having a dinner party," Cowell said, adding that part of the decision came because he felt like the show was starting to feel like every other singing competition series.

Simon Cowell was sharing the love over the weekend on Twitter, posting pics of Eric, his new son with girlfriend Lauren Silverman. "I never knew how much love and pride I would feel," read "The X Factor" judge's caption on the photo showcased above, in which Eric rests on his daddy's chest.  Two other black and white images went up Sunday: One, a straight-on shot of the new baby, is captioned, "…. now you can see how very handsome little Eric is. " The first one to go up, with Cowell cradling his son , shows "Mum, Dad and Eric.

Simon Cowell raced across the Atlantic Ocean on Friday and it was worth the effort: His son with girlfriend Lauren Silverman was born in New York on Valentine's Day. Cowell, 54, hopped a jet in London after getting word that Silverman was in labor and arrived in the Big Apple in the early afternoon. Simon Cowell is closing up shop on the U.S. version of "The X Factor. " Fox, along with Syco and FremantleMedia, announced the show has concluded its stateside run after three seasons. “I've had a fantastic time over the last 12 years, both on 'The X Factor' and 'American Idol.' And apart from being lucky enough to find some amazing talent on the shows, I have always had an incredible welcome from the American public (most of the time!),” Cowell said in a statement. “Last year, for a number of reasons, I had to make a decision to return to the U.K. version of 'The X Factor' in 2014.

Fox has X'd out "The X Factor. " Once hyped as the next "American Idol," Fox has canceled the "The X Factor" after three seasons of shuffling judges and low ratings for the musical talent show. Simon Cowell, who left "American Idol" for "The X Factor," will now focus his efforts on the U.K. version of the show. “Last year, for a number of reasons, I had to make a decision to return to the U.K. version of 'The X Factor' in 2014," Cowell said in a statement. That would seem to contradict what Cowell said two months ago, when he told reporters that "The X Factor" would return for a fourth season.

"Life can change … in a heartbeat," "American Idol" reminded us Wednesday night as it kicked off a new season with a fresh batch of hopefuls, a greater focus on the positive (fewer prolonged looks at the cringe-inducingly untalented and delusional), a few added production bells and whistles (a pre-audition peep at contestants in "The Chamber," new postcard-like city name backdrops, an interactive Twitter poll), more accompaniment (lots of guitars - and a ukulele) and, most notably, a revised judging panel.

Simon Cowell said he's ready to become the butt of many jokes -- from his fashion choices to his private life -- in a forthcoming musical based on his TV show "The X Factor. " "I get it in the neck throughout," Cowell told the BBC during the London launch of "I Can't Sing! The X Factor Musical. " He added that "the big thing for me was if the songs were good or not. " The "X Factor" boss, who is also backing the musical, joined the cast and producers Monday to offer a taste of the production, including the tune "Please Simon," in which hopefuls grovel for the approval of Cowell, played by Olivier Award winner Nigel Harman.

Taylor Swift energetically paced the room of her West Hollywood hotel on a recent visit to Los Angeles. "I'm trying to outrun the jet lag," she said with a smile, looking far from ragged in her matching purple sweater and skirt. Before landing in L.A., she'd flown from Australia to London, then on to Nashville on her way back from the latest leg of her "Red" tour. But Swift, 24, is nothing if not game to be front and center for every facet of her career, so she committed to the schlep to L.A. for a Directors Guild of America screening of "One Chance," the film that's earned her a second Golden Globe Award nomination for her original song, "Sweeter Than Fiction.

Because too much time has passed since there was a judge shakeup on a singing competition show, it looks like Demi Lovato will be stepping down from her judge's perch on "The X Factor. "I started the show being a singer and a musician, and so I'm going to go back to that," Lovato told reporters. "It's been really great, but I'm so excited for 2014.
