There is little doubt quarterback Simon Fuentes has played a major part in the restoration of the Rancho Santiago College football team this fall. Fuentes has already tied a single-season school record for touchdown passes with 16 and the Dons have won seven in a row after dropping their opener. And Rancho Santiago is assured of its first winning season since going 10-1 in 1989. But Fuentes' personal turnaround is almost as impressive as that of the program.

Garden Grove (5-5, 4-3 in the Garden Grove League) will tie for third in the league if Rancho Alamitos beats Pacifica tonight. The Argonauts would receive the playoff berth because of a victory over Pacifica. Kennedy finished the season 3-7 and 1-6. Mistakes played a key role in Thursday's victory.

Bolsa Grande Coach Bill Holst said it was homecoming that did it for the Matadors, inspiring them to their second Garden Grove league victory, 13-10, over Garden Grove High School. "We've gone nuts all week long," he said. "Our kids came ready to play. Our defense was superb. They watched (Garden Grove) films all week, so they knew what to expect." Bolsa Grande might not have expected to win after fumbling five times--although it recovered three of them--and throwing two interceptions.
