Sionainn Marcoux glided through the water Thursday, warming up for the preliminaries of the Southern Section swim relays. Her motions were effortless and graceful, just a natural-born swimmer loosening up for a race. Marcoux, a senior at Foothill High School, was in her element. In water, she is considered one of the top female swimmers in Orange County. On land, well . . . "You ever hear the phrase, 'A fish out of water?' " Foothill Coach Tom DeLong said.

Ryan Cox recently swam for Prince Albert. Sionainn Marcoux will soon swim with Janet Evans. Different kinds of royalty, but either way, the idea is to swim to impress. Cox and Marcoux mastered the task at this week's U.S. Olympic Festival, where they combined for five medals--two golds for Marcoux, a silver and two bronzes for Cox.

10 YEARS AGO Bolsa Grande needed a victory to clinch at least third place and get into the Southern Section baseball playoffs. But the Matadors found themselves trailing by a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh against Los Amigos. Bolsa Grande's chances didn't look good, even though the bases were loaded. But Sal D'Alessandro got what may have been the most dramatic hit of his career, a grand slam, as Bolsa Grande clinched a playoff spot with a 13-10 victory.

Christy Carolin said she is happy her high school swim career is finally over. It's not that her four years of swimming for Capistrano Valley High School were anything to be depressed about. On the contrary, Carolin had tremendous success at the Southern Section 4-A meet during her career. Carolin, The Times' swimmer of the year, won the 50-yard freestyle championship four consecutive years, a feat accomplished by only three other female swimmers in Southern Section history.

A year ago, Tom DeLong coached the Foothill High School boys' swim team to the top. That Southern Section 4-A title by the Knights ended Mission Viejo's 14-year reign as champions. This year, DeLong would like a repeat of that--only this time from his girls' team. The Knights' girls are among the favorites in the 4-A meet tonight at the Belmont Plaza Pool, starting at 7 o'clock. El Toro, Mission Viejo and Fountain Valley are expected to be Foothill's main challengers.

After a three-year absence, the Mission Viejo High School girls' swim team returned to the top--but just barely. The Diablos, who had not won the Southern Section 4-A championship since 1986, came from behind on the last lap of the last race to win the title for the 12th time. The meet came down to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The first time Michelle Ham swam the breaststroke, it was hardly a momentous event. "I was 5 years old and my older brother was competing for a swim club," said Ham, a senior at Fountain Valley High School. "I used to imitate him in our pool. I would jump in and pretend to do the breaststroke. But I didn't know how to kick my legs properly. So my mom suggested I join the club team and learn." Ham has since learned to kick properly. In fact, she's become pretty good at the breaststroke.
