AOL Time Warner's music division is planning to make substantial cutbacks at its London-Sire Records operation before the end of the year, sources said. The move is expected to result in the exit of London-Sire Chairman Seymour Stein, who was responsible for signing such acts as Madonna and Talking Heads. Stein is expected to remain on as a consultant to Warner Music Group Chairman Roger Ames.

Warner Music Group restructured its Sire Records division this week, turning it into a free-standing company once again. The New York-based label has been operating under Warner's Elektra Entertainment umbrella since 1995. The Sire Records Group, which now includes Discovery Records, will continue to be run by Sire founder Seymour Stein, a respected industry veteran who discovered such stars as Madonna and Talking Heads.
