NBC Invests in Store-Based Media Network: NBC said it had an agreement in principal to invest with Oklahoma City-based Fleming Cos. Inc. in building a "site-based" media network in stores across the country. Site-based media includes setting up TV monitors to advertise products or services. Fleming is the largest grocery wholesaler in the country. NBC and Fleming will be joined in their venture by Glen Head, N.Y.-based Silent Radio Inc. and Site Based Media Inc.

SilentRadio, a Chatsworth company whose moving electronic displays featuring news, entertainment and sports scores are in many post offices, banks and other businesses, is going into--what else--silent TV. Its new network, to broadcast both entertainment and commercials, would air first in supermarkets. In March, SilentRadio, the National Broadcasting Co., Fleming Cos., the nation's largest grocery wholesaler, and Site-Based Media Inc.

Silentradio Inc., a Chatsworth supplier of digital electronic signs used by advertisers, said it has tentatively agreed to merge some of its assets with those of Site-based Media Inc., a New York media software company that has been testing a system that delivers advertising on TV monitors in stores. Silentradio and Site-based Media have agreed in principle to team with NBC and food wholesaler Fleming Cos. Inc. to develop a silent TV system for stores.

SilentRadio Inc., a Chatsworth-based provider of information services, said it is negotiating with a New York advertising firm to recover cash and other expenses after SilentRadio's abrupt departure from a joint venture. Last March, SilentRadio agreed with Site-Based Media Inc. of New York and some other parties to form a new network, called On-Site Media Inc., that would broadcast entertainment and commercials in supermarkets.
