In response to "Alleged White Supremacists Seized in Assassination Plots," July 16: Attending a funeral service recently at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, along with hundreds of other mourners from every ethnic and racial background, none of us knew that this beacon of light in a community so much in need had become a target of hate-mongers. I was shocked at the mass arrests of "skinheads" suspected of planning to kill church leaders, whose only offense was bringing people together.

I tend to like children, and generally harbor positive thoughts about the future. But I had my doubts this summer, maybe like you, after the U.S. Open of Surfing crowd degenerated into marauding and brawling - young men clashing with police in riot gear, flipping over rows of porta-potties, ripping out street signs and using them to bash into local businesses. They called it a "riot. " A riot, however, happens when there is at least the perception of some sort of injustice. This was no riot.

Two years ago, a skinhead arrested for beating a Chinese-American teen-ager in Fullerton told police that he and his white-power friends knew where to go in Orange County to meet up with other like-minded youths. "Huntington Beach is the hotbed for skinheads," said the 17-year-old boy, who was from San Dimas in east San Gabriel Valley. Since the mid-1980s, Huntington Beach, famous for its surfing scene, has also been something of a magnet for skinheads.

Kanye West's official video for “Black Skinhead” is finally out. West posted a link to the completed video for the single (stylized as "BLKKK SKKKN HEAD") on his website Monday morning. A rough cut of the clip, the first visual from his polarizing album “Yeezus,” leaked online earlier this month, igniting a furor of tweets from the rapper. “Me and Nick Knight have been working on this video for 5 months and for creatives it's heartbreaking when something like this happens,” he fired off . “Allow me and Nick to give the world what we've been losing sleep over.” RELATED: Kanye West tangles with another paparazzo In the black-and-white clip, a CGI-version of a very buff and shirtless West dances and raps in the dark using some coarse language as well as haunting images, including some rather ferocious Dobermans and Ku Klux Klan-inspired visuals.

Being a member of the Los Angeles-based Crips gang, I find myself commenting on the article on skinheads. Skinheads pose the most dangerous threat to the fabric of this society. Unlike black and Hispanic gangs in our area, skinheads enjoy the best of both worlds. Like the black gangs in Los Angeles, skinheads are a loosely knit lot with no clear recognizable leaders. A law enforcement official quoted in the article mentioned that skinheads "won't survive because they don't have an economic base.

Thank you for the article "Ganging Up" (Nov. 30) on the wonderful world of 'Skinheads.' These youths need all the publicity you can give them. We will all be eternally grateful to them for their fine artistic endeavors as displayed on the building walls of downtown Huntington Beach. We find their quaint style of dress extremely appealing. We also need to give as much publicity as we can to any organization, no matter how small, that advocates terrorism, racism, violence and hate.

Re "Huntington Beach Strip Is Skinheads' Nighttime Haunt," Feb. 7: To me, as an Asian American born and raised in Huntington Beach for 17 years, the recent attack on a Native American only adds to a pattern of hate crimes that has proven endemic to the city. On June 15, 1991, for example, three Japanese women were attacked by a group of Caucasian women outside the Huntington Beach Red Onion Restaurant. On June 15, 1992, three white men attacked four Asian American youths on Beach Boulevard.

Two teenage members of a reputed white supremacist gang accused of terrorizing a Canyon Country neighborhood were assigned to juvenile camps this week while a third was placed on probation and released to his parents. A fourth teen, David Eugene Lampman, 18, the only adult arrested in a police sweep last month, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 9 in Newhall Superior Court. Detectives, who are continuing their investigation, said as many as 10 more arrests are expected in the case.

An Anaheim woman arrested as part of a federal investigation into the criminal activities of white supremacist skinheads was sentenced Tuesday to one year's probation for violating federal weapons laws. U.S. District Judge Linda H. McLaughlin in Santa Ana ordered Jill Marie Scarborough, 22, who pleaded guilty last December to possessing an unregistered, sawed-off shotgun, to live in a Garden Grove halfway house for six months and to submit to frequent drug testing and treatment.

"I'm doing 500 / I'm out of control now," Kanye West growled halfway through "Black Skinhead," one of two new songs the rap superstar performed on "Saturday Night Live. " Here's the thing, though: For all the righteous fury he summoned in "Black Skinhead" -- which appears to have been inspired in part by reactions to his relationship with Kim Kardashian -- West never sounded out of control Saturday. His performance was a thrilling master class in applied energy, a focused beam of intensity aimed directly at a "Middle America packed in ... to see me in my black skin," as he put it in lyrics he posted to Twitter following the show.

Swastikas and the word "skinhead" were painted at a Costa Mesa elementary school's baseball field, officials said Monday. Kaiser Elementary School Principal Deborah Granger said staffers first noticed the slurs when they got to school. Swastikas were painted on trash cans, and the word "skinhead" with a swastika had been painted on part of the backstop, Granger said. The tops of benches had also been painted white. Over the weekend, a usually locked gate that is used by other campuses had been left open, Granger said.

It's not that often that you get to go up to a skinhead and ask him what it is that draws him into the maelstrom of anger, intimidation and sometimes violence that is today's white supremacy movement. But that's just what David Lazarus, host of the Los Angeles Times' Google hangout on Hate in America, did with TJ Leyden, longtime white supremacist activist and recruiter. Leyden has renounced the white power movement and now lectures young people on what can seem like its dangerous allure, but Lazarus wanted to know what it was that attracted him to a world in which non-whites are not only detested, but often subjected to violence.

White power, hate groups, tragedies fired by hatred -- they're all part of the boiling-hot topic of hate in America that's come into focus with the Sikh temple rampage. Today, a former skinhead, an expert on extremism, a professor of criminology and a representative of the Islamic community are on tap for a live video discussion of the topic with the Los Angeles Times. Los Angeles Times reporter Kim Murphy, who also will take part in today's live discussion, writes that authorities have been piecing together information about gunman Wade Michael Page, who killed six people at a suburban Milwaukee Sikh temple: "So far, it has led to the same dark image: a 40-year-old skinhead band guitarist who stepped alone out of his SUV, walked alone to the temple, fired a Springfield Armory XDM handgun at the elderly turbaned priests and other worshipers inside and finally, crippled by a police marksman's bullet, fired a fatal round into his own head.

A dozen years ago, a neo-Nazi skinhead named John Butler was convicted of killing two young men who, while also skinheads, condemned his white supremacist beliefs. But authorities have long contended that Butler had help gunning down his victims in the desert outside Las Vegas. On Wednesday, federal prosecutors indicted three people they described as Butler's accomplices in the 1998 killings of Daniel Shersty and Lin Newborn, who belonged to a Las Vegas group dedicated to fighting racism.

When the family of Chad Brian Scott, a heavily tattooed former white supremacist, contacted Milton Grimes seeking legal representation, the veteran black attorney had one initial question: "Do you happen to know my race?" They did. And it didn't matter. What they were looking for was a good lawyer, recalled Scott's cousin Leah Jensen. Scott, a former skinhead who suffers from schizophrenic and bipolar disorders, was forcibly restrained by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies after he tried to resist arrest, authorities said.

In the latest hate-crime case prosecuted under a joint program by county and federal law enforcement agencies, two reputed skinheads entered guilty pleas Friday to charges that they beat a Latino man in a racially motivated attack outside a Lancaster convenience store. Randy Rojas and Brent Toner, who the FBI says are members of an Antelope Valley skinhead group called the Nazi Lowriders, entered guilty pleas to assault and hate-crime charges in Los Angeles Municipal Court.

Zurich police on Thursday were investigating an assault on a pregnant Brazilian woman that caused her to miscarry twins and left her scarred with the initials of Switzerland's main right-wing party. Brazil's Foreign Ministry and Brazilian media reported that three skinheads, one with a Nazi symbol tattooed on his forehead, attacked the woman outside a train station in Zurich as she was speaking Portuguese on a cellphone. Details shocked people in both countries.
