Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc., the biggest seller of electronic television program guides, said Monday that it will buy airline flight catalog company SkyMall Inc. for about $47.5 million. Pasadena-based Gemstar also reported a 24% gain in pretax first-quarter earnings before charges, on a 1% decline in sales.

* Hospitality Properties Trust agreed to buy 17 hotels in the Midwest and South from Marriott International Inc. for $201.7 million. The acquisition involves two Marriott hotels, three Residence Inns, three Courtyard hotels and nine TownPlace Suites, mostly in the South. * * SkyMall Inc., the largest U.S. in-flight catalog retailer, said co-founder and board member Alan Ashton resigned and that Chief Executive Robert Worsley, another co-founder, purchased Ashton's shares in the company.

Online shopping during the holiday season more than tripled over last year, according to estimates issued Monday, and Internet retailers reported that traffic has remained extremely heavy in the days after Christmas. Boston Consulting Group said online holiday shopping grew by 230% this year, with the size of the average order rising to $55, a gain of 6% over the same period in 1997. Few retailers have released hard figures on the season.
