As their coach describes them, they're a bunch of lionhearted knuckleheads who have made history in Laguna Beach, becoming the first soccer team in this city to snag an American Youth Soccer Organization state championship. "This was the most talented group of kids I'd ever coached in my entire coaching career," Jeff Brown said of the 12- and 13-year-old boys. "Every team we played was bigger and faster than us."

Ocean View and Santa Ana, two of the top six boys' soccer teams in Orange County, played to a 2-2 overtime tie in a Sunset League game Wednesday at Ocean View. Chad Lawson scored the tying goal with 12 minutes remaining for sixth-ranked Ocean View (12-2-1, 3-0-1 in league). Jorge Perez scored twice for No. 2 Santa Ana (10-1-4), 3-0-2). In Century League boys' soccer: Orange 1, Canyon 0--Edward Rodriguez scored for Orange (9-4-4, 1-1) at Canyon (9-4-3, 0-1).

Five Huntington Beach High School graduates and two of the top players in the nation form one of the favored teams in the United States Volleyball Assn. national championships Monday through Saturday at Wichita State University. Steve Timmons, a member of the 1984 gold-medal U.S. Olympic team, and Bob Ctvrtlik, the 1985 NCAA player of the year from Pepperdine, join the SBE/Raymond Construction team, which finished second in the 48-team event last season.
