Scarlett Johansson defended herself for working with Woody Allen, who has been accused of sexual abuse by his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow, and for promoting SodaStream, an Israeli-owned company that operates a factory in a West Bank settlement, during a recent interview with the Guardian. Johansson, who has starred in three of Allen's films, was criticized along with other actors by Farrow in an open letter published in the New York Times last month. Johansson  told the Guardian , "I think it's irresponsible to take a bunch of actors that will have a Google alert on and to suddenly throw their name into a situation that none of us could possibly knowingly comment on. That just feels irresponsible to me. " Regarding the controversy, which ignited a firestorm of debate and prompted Allen to respond with his own New York Times op-ed, Johansson said, "I'm unaware that there's been a backlash.

Scarlett Johansson has resigned from her post as an Oxfam ambassador following her participation in a SodaStream campaign that ensconced the actress in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and put her odds with the humanitarian charity.  The "Her" voice actress became the global face of SodaStream, a Tel Aviv-based soda machine company that operates in the West Bank settlement of Maaleh Adumim, earlier this month; however, her affiliation with that...

JERUSALEM - It's a rare thing when a Hollywood actress and a kitchen appliance spark a debate about policies in the Middle East. But that's what happened after Scarlett Johansson filmed a Super Bowl advertisement for a company that employs Palestinians to produce seltzer-making machines in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The company, SodaStream International Ltd., is a target of a growing boycott movement of products made on land seized by Israel in the 1967 Middle East War and claimed by Palestinians for a future independent state.

New Yorker film critic Anthony Lane is catching heat for his recent profile of Scarlett Johansson , which detractors say fawns over the actress without bothering to comprehend her. Johansson has two films coming out on the same day (April 4):  "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Under the Skin," and has recently been linked to separate controversies involving SodaStream and Woody Allen. As critics of Lane's profile point out, he devotes much of it to cataloging Johansson 's allure, describing "the honey of her voice" and declaring that she "looks tellingly radiant in the flesh" or seems to be " made  from champagne.

Miley Cyrus has been 21 for all of two months now, give or take, but she's already something of a senior statesman, apparently giving advice to a pal, 19-year-old Justin Bieber. "I would just say, you know what, you've got a lot of money. Pay people to make sure you don't get in trouble," she sagely told Jay Leno on Thursday's "The Tonight Show. " "And party at your house. Buy a house, and add a club to it. " From what the neighbors have said, we think he's already following through on the second part, with lousy results, but the first part sounds pretty common sense.

RAHAT, Israel - On a patch of agricultural land outside Israel's only officially recognized Bedouin city, workers are laying concrete for what the government says will be a cornerstone of its policy to lure impoverished Arabs from barren Negev desert terrain to approved Israeli towns. Upon completion, Idan Hanegev is designed to be Israel's largest industrial park, an 860-acre site with 130 factories employing thousands of Bedouins, a once-nomadic people who have lived in the Negev and other parts of the region since long before the nation of Israel was established.
