Toyota Motor Corp. launched a massive global recall of its popular Prius hybrid to fix a software glitch that could cause the car to stall, an aggressive reaction to counter past criticism of its slow response to defects, experts said. The Japanese automaker also said it would recall about 260,000 RAV4 sport utility vehicles, Tacoma trucks and Lexus RX350 SUVs sold in the United States to address a separate issue. The recall of the Prius, one of America's best-selling passenger cars and the top-selling vehicle in California, covers 1.9 million hybrids from the 2010 through 2014 model years.

The Chrysler Group has announced it is issuing two separate recalls that will affect nearly 37,000 vehicles in the U.S. The first recall affects 18,700 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs from the 2012 and 2013 model years. The vehicles are being recalled to correct an issue with the software in an optional emergency braking system. The system's factory settings restrict the flow of brake fluid too much, causing customers to complain about an odd feeling in the brake pedal, according to Chrysler.

Apple is updating iOS 6 for the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod Touch with a handful of useful features including allowing high-speed LTE connectivity with more carriers. The Cupertino, Calif., company released the iOS 6.1 update Monday morning. Users can access the update on their devices by going to the Settings app, tapping General and selecting Software Update. The software update is particularly useful for owners of devices that don't have 4G LTE connectivity. It'll allow the iPhone 5, the third and fourth-generation iPad and the iPad mini to have the high-speed data connection with more carriers.

Apple on Monday released iOS 7.1, an update for the iPhone and iPad operating system that includes a few new features and bug fixes. Chief among the additions is CarPlay, Apple's car infotainment system that was announced last week . IPhone 5s, 5c and 5 owners who own cars that support CarPlay will be able to use the feature. The update, which includes a few aesthetic changes to the interface, also fixes a bug that has come to be known as the " black/white screen of death . " That bug caused a few Apple iOS devices to randomly crash and restart.

Barnes & Noble knows it's not winning the tablet race by any margin, but the book retailer is hoping for a big boost for Mother's Day. The company is discounting its 9-inch screen Nook HD+ tablet by $90 , down from $269 to $179. Barnes & Noble is also discounting the Nook HD by $50 from $199 to $149. The Nook HD has a smaller 7-inch screen with a lower resolution than the screen on the Nook HD+. But besides discounts, Barnes & Noble is also making efforts to improve the products to spur sales.

Honda is expanding an earlier recall of its compact Fit hatchback, saying another 48,000 vehicles need to have their stability control software updated. Thursday's announcement brings to 91,920 the number of Honda Fits from the 2012 and 2013 model years that are affected by the recall. The vehicles need a software update to the vehicle's electronic stability control system, Honda said in a statement. The first recall was issued in April and affected only the more premium Sport versions.

Amazon announced a free software update for Kindle Paperwhite that will add several new features to the e-reader. Amazon said the update would be delivered over the air automatically in the coming weeks, or via download from its website. The update includes integration with Goodreads, the books-recommendation website that Amazon purchased this year. Features of the new Goodreads integration include the ability to see what your friends are reading, read their reviews and discover new books to read; share favorite passages with your Goodreads friends without leaving the book; and, when you finish a book, immediately rate it from your Kindle.

Apple on Thursday released an update for iOS 7  to fix bugs that potentially let users bypass the phone's lock screen. The problems emerged not long after Apple made the radically redesigned version of its mobile operating system available for download last week. The bugs let people who could get their hands on a phone go around the lock screen without using the four-digit security code. Apple's iOS 6 is now live and ready for download. The update of the mobile operating system became available on the West Coast at 10 a.m. Users who want to download it can do so by connecting a supported Apple device to their computers and launching iTunes. Or they can download it wirelessly by going to the Settings app, clicking "General" and clicking "Software Update. " Usually, iOS updates take a couple of minutes, but it can take as much as a half hour. PHOTOS: Apple iPhone 5 Apple's iOS 6 is supported by second- and third-generation iPads, fourth- and fifth-generation iPod Touches, and the iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S and, of course, the 5. Among the new features: it allows Siri voice commands to work on the third-generation iPad and the new iPod Touch; it integrates Facebook into the operating system; and a new app called PassBook can digitally store flight boarding passes, movie tickets and other items.  And iOS 6 will include Apple's new Maps app, which replaces Google Maps for navigation.
