Reigning European monarchs don't come along every day, not even to Beverly Hills. So it was no surprise that event patrons and other guests at the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Awards felt privileged to attend a private party at Cartier with Prince Albert II, who arrived from Monaco to represent his mother, the late Princess Grace of Monaco. This year, the city of Beverly Hills and the Rodeo Drive Committee honored both Cartier and Princess Grace with plaques on the famed luxury street.

We discovered the Ruin about 12 years ago when it was a small, abandoned stone house. We were hiking in Pioneertown's Pipes Canyon, and there it was, all by itself in a cove-like setting of boulders and desert plants and barely the remains of a road to get to it. We hiked back about a year after and the roof had been knocked in, or it had caved in after years of weather and neglect. A few months later, on another visit, we saw the western wall where the front door and window once stood were gone.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art opened its doors and courtyard to a free all-night art party last year, and lines snaked down Wilshire Boulevard for a quarter of a mile. More than 8,000 people braved the long waits for Cabaret LACMA in September. Organizers hope to repeat that success Thursday with another free, all-night event, beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing to 7 a.m. Friday.

Los Angeles, like the rest of the country, may be infested with vampire culture, as evidenced by the "Twilight" juggernaut, "True Blood" and its TV spinoffs, and lots of clubs and societies for bloodsuckers, but it shows no sign of stopping. Angelenos ruing the departure of this year's high-profile Comic-Con will find this weekend ripe for a fantasy fix, with no fewer than four major opportunities welcoming woodland nymphs, drooling zombies and sexy vampires. Between Serendipity's secret garden party, two zombie walks and Vampire-Con, Los Angeles will be crawling with creatures . . . even more than usual, that is. Friday's Serendipity party focuses on the sweet and sumptuous.

On a Sunday afternoon, a house full of people sat attentively at a cozy A-frame home in the Hollywood Hills. Against a huge window with a breathtaking view of the surrounding canyon and the Los Angeles basin in the distance, the audience heard an informal but passionate jazz performance. Singer Greta Matassa made the trip from Seattle, expressly for this impromptu recital. Teamed with the estimable young rhythm section of pianist Josh Nelson, bassist Hamilton Price and drummer Clayton Cameron, Matassa exulted in the informal freedom of this, one of several ongoing L.A. jazz salons.

There are many measures of the "great recession of 2009" -- unemployment numbers, store closings and graduate school applications among them. But what about the parties and events for which Southern California is known? What about the skywriting, snow machines and ice sculptures? Local party planners and event producers offer a mixed report: During the last year, $1-million bashes still took place, and individuals with money still celebrated weddings and birthdays in style. But many planners say that a majority of big party-givers -- whether private, corporate or nonprofit -- cut their budgets.
