Movie director Lee Tamahori has been charged with solicitation after allegedly dressing as a woman and offering sex to an undercover Los Angeles police officer in exchange for money, a city attorney's spokesman said Thursday. Tamahori, who directed "Die Another Day," and "Mulholland Falls," was arrested Jan. 8 on Santa Monica Boulevard, the spokesman said. He faces two misdemeanor counts.

The board of education of the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District has begun its search for a new superintendent to replace James E. Johnson, who retired. The board will be advised in the process by Richard Montgomery of the California School Boards Assn., who will determine the specific abilities and experience desired in the new superintendent. The public may discuss these matters with Montgomery at meetings in the district office, 15959 E. Gale Ave., City of Industry today from 8 a.m.

A jury in Aurora, Colo., convicted offensive lineman Gerald Perry of the Denver Broncos of soliciting a prostitute but acquitted him of two other charges and declared a mistrial on a fourth charge. Perry, a 305-pound tackle, was arrested Sept. 7 when he was found standing half-naked outside his truck with an alleged prostitute. He was charged with soliciting for prostitution, assault and battery, impersonating a police officer and false imprisonment.

San Diego police arrested 105 men for solicitation Friday night and early Saturday in what they believe is the largest number of such arrests in the city's history. From 6 p.m. Friday until 3:30 a.m. Saturday, eight plainclothes female officers were stationed in the area around the 4700 block of El Cajon Blvd., said police spokesman Bill Robinson.

A man accused of putting out a $500 murder contract on someone he thought had stolen his car has been arrested in Port Hueneme, police said Friday. Robert Hicks, 37, of Lompoc was being held at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail, authorities said. The incident began Monday, police said, when Hicks met Matthew Makela, 34, an unemployed drywaller, at a party in Santa Maria. Makela then drove Hicks' car to Port Hueneme.

Councilman Gerry Solomon, who built a political career defending family values and led the campaign to ban adult entertainment in this East County community, was arrested last week and cited for soliciting a lewd act from an undercover police officer. His ensnarement in one of the La Mesa Police Department's periodic attacks on prostitution along El Cajon Boulevard has Santee in an uproar.

Assemblyman Jim Costa pleaded no contest today to a charge of soliciting a prostitute and was placed on three years' probation and fined $255. The plea was entered in Municipal Court in Sacramento by Costa's attorney. Costa, 34, a Democrat from Fresno, did not appear in court. The assemblyman was arrested Aug. 29 in north Sacramento after police said he and a 19-year-old prostitute approached a female undercover operative who was posing as a prostitute.
