When Song Yang began his freshman year at Katella High 18 months ago, he didn't speak a word of English, much less understand the instruction that comes with learning to pole vault. "When I first met him, we couldn't communicate at all," said John Clemmons, the pole vault coach at Katella the last four years. "Luckily, I found a guy on the tennis courts who could translate."

Six adults and seven children were injured, three of them critically, when a rented van carrying three families crashed Saturday afternoon on California 33 north of Lockwood Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol. The accident occurred about noon, just inside Ventura County and about four miles south of the Santa Barbara County town of Ventucopa, authorities said. The families were driving to their homes in Lakewood in Los Angeles County.

Zack Zehnder's par putt on the ninth hole gave top-ranked Servite a 184-185 victory over Santa Margarita in a Serra League boys' golf match Thursday at Los Coyotes Country Club. Servite (12-2) clinched the league title with a record of 6-0. Santa Margarita is 12-2, 4-2. Zehnder's five-foot putt followed a birdie by Santa Margarita's Steve Conway on the par-five ninth, which brought the Eagles within one stroke. Nico Bollini of Servite was medalist with a three-under-par 32.

Like hundreds of athletes at the Southern Section finals, Capistrano Valley junior Kris Monte and Costa Mesa senior Julie Kroening finished their events at Cerritos College, smiled at a job well done and prepared to call it a season. Both set school records while finishing third in their events Saturday; Monte the 800 meters in Division I and Kroening the 300 hurdles in Division III.

When Song Yang published his Bad Girl comic book last year, his friends asked whether the character was him in disguise.
