When Sonny Cumbie played for Texas Tech, he waited three years backing up Kliff Klingsbury and B.J. Symons before becoming the Red Raiders' starting quarterback. Cumbie needed only four weeks before getting the nod with the Avengers, who will give him his first Arena Football League start tonight against Utah at Staples Center.

Although the Avengers have lost four consecutive games -- their longest losing streak since the start of the 2001 season -- things are looking up for the defending Western Division champions. That's because of the emergence of quarterback Sonny Cumbie. A rookie from Texas Tech who led the NCAA in passing as a senior in 2004, Cumbie played well in his first career Arena Football League start last week, a 68-66 loss to Utah at Staples Center.

Bobby Sippio set Chicago records with 14 catches for 224 yards and scored five touchdowns to help the defending ArenaBowl champion Rush beat the Avengers, 66-31, Sunday. Matt D'Orazio completed 23 of 30 passes for 287 yards and six touchdowns for the Rush (4-1), which had 42 second-half points. Tim Hicks and Sonny Cumbie each had two touchdown passes for the Avengers (2-2).

Raymond Philyaw threw five touchdown passes and also ran for a score in the Kansas City Brigade's 62-56 victory over the Avengers on Saturday night in the Arena Football League. Philyaw completed 18 of 27 passes for 224 yards, and Charles Frederick led the Brigade (7-5) in receiving with seven catches for 88 yards and three touchdowns. Sonny Cumbie threw six scoring passes for the Avengers (6-6).

TAMPA, Fla. -- Brett Dietz completed 27 of 39 passes for 327 yards and six touchdowns in the Tampa Bay Storm's 72-47 victory over the Avengers on Saturday night. Lawrence Samuels caught 11 passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns for the Storm (8-8). Sonny Cumbie completed 18 of 31 passes for 273 yards and five touchdowns but also had two passes intercepted for the Avengers (5-11). The defeat eliminated the Avengers from playoff contention.

Germaine completed 16 of 30 passes for 240 yards for Utah (5-10). Huey Whittaker had five catches for 64 yards and three touchdowns. Avengers quarterback Sonny Cumbie was 23-for-42 passing for 282 yards and four touchdowns. Kevin Ingram had 12 catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns for the Avengers (4-10).

Cumbie completed 32 of 48 passes for 340 yards and five touchdowns for the Avengers (1-1). Lenzie Jackson caught 11 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown, and Kevin Ingram had 10 receptions for 113 yards and two scores. Shane Stafford was 22 of 46 for 274 yards and three touchdowns for the Predators (1-1).
