An Amber Alert was issued Sunday after a man allegedly shot his estranged wife and kidnapped his sons in Sunland. According to Officer Karen Smith of the Los Angeles Po- lice Department, the mother dropped off her two sons at her estranged husband's home in the 10400 block of McBroom Street, about 10:40 a.m. Police said the couple argued and the man shot his wife at least 13 times, but she was able to speak before being taken to a hospital....

Princess Diana has issued a public apology after being castigated in the British press for taking her two sons, Princes William and Harry, to see a film about the Irish Republican Army. Her controversial trip was to see Columbia's "The Devil's Own," with Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford, at the Kensington Odeon in west London. The film has been attacked by some British critics as pro-Irish Republican propaganda, designed to appeal to Irish American audiences.

The 21-year-old son of Glendale City Councilman Larry Zarian pleaded no contest to embezzling $3,500 from the Nordstrom department store in Glendale and has been ordered into a drug rehabilitation program. "He was using the money to buy drugs--cocaine," Deputy Dist. Atty. John Bernardi said of Gregory William Zarian, one of the councilman's twin sons.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's eldest son pleaded guilty to charges of illegal fund-raising for his father's 1999 election campaign. Omri Sharon, a member of parliament, appeared briefly in a Tel Aviv court to admit falsifying corporate documents, committing perjury and violating party funding laws. Under a plea deal, prosecutors dropped charges of fraud and breach of trust but are demanding imprisonment on the other counts. Sentencing is scheduled for January.

Former Oklahoma State coach Gary Ward, who led the Cowboys to 10 College World Series appearances in 19 seasons, replaced his son as coach at New Mexico State on Wednesday. Rocky Ward, the Aggies' coach the past four seasons, will remain as an assistant coach after the school decided to reorganize the program. The Aggies went 19-36 last season, including 4-26 in the Big West Conference.

State prosecutors asked a Seoul court to jail President Kim Young Sam's son for seven years on charges of bribery and tax evasion. Senior prosecutor Lee Hoon Kyu said the prosecution also wanted Kim Hyon Chol to pay $5.23 million in fines. The younger Kim has admitted accepting $3.6 million from two businessmen but denied the funds were bribes. His arrest in May and his trial have dealt a serious blow to his father's credibility, already damaged by a scandal involving the Hanbo conglomerate.
