Sony Corp. has promoted Andrew House to president and group chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., the division that encompasses its PlayStation gaming business. House will report to Kazuo Hirai, who took on the title of chairman of the gaming division. Hirai will replace Akira Sato, who will retire Aug. 31. The promotions take effect Sept. 1. Sony also said Ken Kutaragi, the outspoken semiconductor engineer credited with creating the original PlayStation, retired Tuesday from his largely ceremonial role as honorary chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment.

NEW YORK -- Sony Computer Entertainment ended weeks of speculation and unveiled its next generation PlayStation 4 Wednesday at a presentation at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom. Calling it the “most personalized experience available today,” Sony highlighted the increased mobility, decreased download times, and strong social-networking component of its new device. The PS4, the first new PlayStation available in seven 7 years, will be available commercially in time for the year-end will holiday season, 2013, marking an unusually fast turnaround of less than a year.

Sony Computer Entertainment America will announce today that it will slash the price of its PlayStation console from $129 to $99 and the price of a series of its most popular games from about $39 to $19.99 each starting Aug. 23. Analysts had expected the nation's No. 1 video game firm to drop the price of its best-selling PlayStation in time for the introduction of No. 3 Sega's powerful next-generation console, the Dreamcast, on Sept. 9.

NEW YORK -- Sony Computer Entertainment unveiled its next generation PlayStation 4 on Wednesday, calling the device the industry's "most personalized gaming experience. " Sony boasted of more power, faster response time, higher performance, better playability and the increased mobility to "take gaming out of the living room. " Before an invited audience of 1,200, Sony executives and game designers -- via videotaped messages -- discussed statistics and showed  how the new game controller uses "cloud" processes to bring gamers a heightened experience and better facilitate game-sharing.

Sony Computer Entertainment announced technical specifications for its next-generation video game console--the company's latest effort to maintain its lead in the video game market. The Foster City, Calif.-based company, the video game unit of Japan's Sony Corp., would not discuss the look or price of the unit, known unofficially as PlayStation II, and scheduled for U.S. release in 2000. It will be four times more powerful than the current PlayStation.

Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc., a U.S. unit of Sony Corp., said its new PlayStation Portable video-game machines generated more than $150 million in sales at U.S. retailers in the first week of release. Sony started selling the $249 game system, also called the PSP, on March 24. The PSP is the first challenge by Sony to Nintendo in the $4.5-billion market for hand-held gaming devices. It also plays movies and music.

Sony Unveils Chip for Video Game Machine: Sony Computer Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp., and LSI Logic Corp. unveiled an advanced chip that will power Sony's new video game player, the PlayStation. The PlayStation microchip contains advanced three-dimensional geometric graphics and high-resolution full-motion video. It is a 32-bit RISC (reduced instruction set computing) chip, which has architecture that reduces the complexity of the chip by using simpler instructions.

Re "Fun and Games--and Gore" (Column One, May 12), concerning violence in video games, there are several factors at work. First of all, the almighty dollar seems to take precedence over any sense of value. Second, women and children are undervalued in our society. These insidious, misogynistic games are designed by men and targeted at boys. To the president of Sony Computer Entertainment who disclaims responsibility for being "keeper of the American value system"--just try being a parent today, with the disgusting trash we get from TV, movies, advertising and video games.

Sony Computer Entertainment America would not disclose the number of workers affected. Company executives speaking on condition of anonymity said that as many as 50 people, or 3% of the 1,600 employees in its Foster City, Calif., office, would lose their jobs.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo goes down Tuesday to June 17, but as expected of L.A.'s biggest annual geek party, the major industry events start before the actual conference begins in hopes of capitalizing on the most media buzz. In fact, this year's official events wrap up on the first day of E3, leaving the spotlight on the exhibitors at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Wednesday and June 17. E3, as it's known, opens its doors only to industry professionals and reporters, but most events are available to virtual "party crashers" via live Web streams.

In January, Stephanie Barish took her son to a birthday party and made the fortuitous choice to wear a T-shirt with the logo for Indiecade, a festival she runs that is dedicated to independently made, artistic video games. While there, she met a fellow parent, Scott Malsin, who was then the mayor of Culver City. He asked what the T-shirt meant and was immediately intrigued. "I wasn't aware of that world at all, but as we spoke it immediately appealed to me, and I asked her if she would think about holding it in Culver City," said Malsin, who's now on the City Council.

More than 250 titles are $20. Sony said game publishers were planning to release 70 to 80 new titles, primarily sports and casual games, this year, bringing the total to nearly 1,900 by the end of the year.

Sony Corp. scouted out an unusual place to advertise its PlayStation Portable before the holidays: the side of an abandoned building in a gritty North Philadelphia neighborhood. The black-on-white graffiti shows wide-eyed cartoon characters riding the PlayStation like a skateboard, licking it like a lollipop or cranking it like a jack-in-the-box. But there's no mention of Sony or the PlayStation brand -- nor any hint the wordless display is an ad.
