Citing a lull in its film production schedule, Sony Pictures Imageworks fired 20 employees in its visual-effects crew. The Culver City firm--the 300-person digital arm of Sony Pictures Entertainment and one of Hollywood's largest visual-effects shops--said the layoffs will affect all departments, with the largest cuts coming from its staff of computer artists. No other cutbacks were planned, officials said. Sony's action marks the latest shake-up in the special-effects industry.

They called it the zombie walk. After midnight, when the coffee and Red Bull had worn off, Sari Gennis and her co-workers would take a brisk stroll to make it through their graveyard shift. For four months straight, often seven days a week, a team of visual effects artists worked 12-hour shifts to complete the 3-D conversion of movie blockbuster "Titanic. " Gennis said the long hours aggravated a severe arthritis condition. She'd already had both knees replaced, and needed a third surgery, but couldn't afford to take time off for the operation.

Sony Pictures Imageworks, one of Hollywood's leading visual effects companies, has decided to move more than 100 jobs from Culver City to New Mexico. Imageworks will open a 100,000-square-foot satellite facility by next spring within Albuquerque Studios, a new production studio near the city's airport. Sony executives and New Mexico officials confirmed the move Wednesday in advance of a formal announcement expected today.

Sony Pictures Entertainment is looking to sell at least 50% of its low-margin digital production unit and its 5-year-old animation division, studio officials confirmed Wednesday. Sony Pictures Imageworks has produced computer-generated effects and 3-D animation for the Culver City studio's movies and those of rivals for 15 years. But the unit's profit is "much below" SPE's target of 10%, said a Sony executive who asked not to be named because discussions with potential investors are preliminary.

Five-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Ken Ralston ("Forrest Gump") is leaving Industrial Light & Magic after 18 years to become president of Sony Pictures Imageworks. Sony, which is expected to make a formal announcement of the deal today--is looking to Ralston to enhance its 3-year-old in-house digital production unit and make it more competitive with the industry's more prominent effects houses such as ILM.
