What is incest? What is a stepfamily? And what are appropriate and socially acceptable relationships between parents and children who are not related biologically but through marriage or other long-term commitments? The Woody Allen/Mia Farrow/Soon-Yi Farrow Previn love triangle makes for good party chatter and bad jokes but, because they are high-profile personalities, the media blitz has also opened the door to debate on a different kind of "family values"--those of stepfamilies.

Catching Up: Stories about Woody Allen and his romance with a Korean-born 21-year-old are just now filling South Korean magazines, a month after the affair was revealed. September issues of dozens of women's magazines carry pictures and stories on Allen, 56, and Soon-Yi Farrow Previn, the adopted daughter of actress Mia Farrow, Allen's former love. Korean media largely ignored the scandal initially because the key figures are unknown there.

Articles on the Woody Allen-Mia Farrow scandal abound, and for the most part focus on Allen's films and what we can now glean from them in the aftermath of the various allegations. I refer directly to the column by Nelson Pressley (Commentary, Aug. 23). Where are the words of concern for Soon-Yi Farrow Previn? Consider how this whole affair will affect her life. Soon-Yi is a child. As children are consistently devalued in this great America, it is no surprise that she is being treated as a mere "character" in a novel or movie.

Testifying under sharp cross-examination, Woody Allen said Monday that at one point he told Mia Farrow he had ended his affair with her 22-year-old adopted daughter while he really was "in constant contact" with her "five or six times a day." Allen said he used the ruse in an attempt to calm Farrow, who was in a rage over Allen's relationship with Soon-Yi Farrow Previn, the adopted daughter of Farrow and her former husband, conductor Andre Previn.

Woody Allen says there are no incestuous overtones to his relationship with the adopted daughter of his ex-lover Mia Farrow, and that he took nude pictures of the young woman because she asked him to. "I am not Soon-Yi's father or stepfather," the filmmaker told Time magazine Friday in his first interview since the affair became public. "I've never even lived with Mia. I have never in my life slept in Mia's apartment. I was not any type of father to her adopted kids in any sense of the word."

As charges and countercharges fly between Woody Allen and Mia Farrow in their bitter child custody battle here, relatives and friends of the famed actor-director have rallied to his defense, painting a sympathetic picture of him and blasting Farrow for accusing him of sexually abusing one of their children.

The twisted psychodrama of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow deepened Wednesday as her press agent revealed that Farrow had videotaped her 7-year-old daughter Dylan recounting alleged sexual abuse by Allen. A copy of the tape ended up at a local television station. Producers considered airing it, but were stopped by lawyers representing the feuding parents, said John Springer, a Farrow spokesman.

Woody Allen's 14-year-old adopted son, enraged by the filmmaker's affair with his older sister, wrote that he wished his father would kill himself if he tried to gain custody of the children he shared with Mia Farrow, according to a letter presented Tuesday as evidence in court. "You have done a horrible, unforgivable, terrible, stupid, ugly thing. Those are my thoughts and feelings towards you," the undated letter purportedly written to Allen by Moses Farrow said.

An attorney for actress Mia Farrow attempted Tuesday to get a judge to look at nude photographs that actor-director Woody Allen took of her 21-year-old adopted daughter, Allen's acknowledged lover, claiming the pictures are pornographic and an indication of Allen's warped mind.

Woody Allen testified Friday that Mia Farrow feigned suicide, made threatening pre-dawn phone calls to him and once frightened him so badly that he slept in his clothes after he hid sharp gardening tools from her. Farrow stared at the filmmaker across the courtroom and at times wept as the two former lovers began a bitter trial for custody of their three children. Allen said he once gave Farrow a $1-million gift after he had a particularly lucrative year in the movie business.
