Irvine's Sorin to Sell Part of Division: Sorin Biomedical Inc. in Irvine said Wednesday that it plans to sell part of its Irvine-based medical products division to a St. Louis company in a deal to be completed later this year. Sorin's tracheostomy division will be sold to Mallinckrodt Medical Inc. in a transaction valued at $84.1 million. Sorin, a unit of Fiat SpA in Turin, Italy, will keep its cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary and diagnostic products divisions. Sorin spokesman T.C.

Irvine medical device maker Sorin Biomedical Inc. will shut down by the end of the year, laying off about 250 employees, company executives said Tuesday. The cuts are part of a consolidation by the company's parent, Italy's Sorin Biomedica SpA. On Monday, the Italian company closed a $247-million deal to acquire COBE CV of Denver, a leading manufacturer of cardiopulmonary systems.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday allowed a Philadelphia woman to sue Pfizer Inc. and its Irvine-based unit, Shiley Inc., over a heart valve that she had removed. The court's decision is likely to prompt others to proceed with efforts to recover more than they could have received through a class-action settlement with the two companies, attorneys said.
