Soroptimist International of Irvine has launched a local offshoot of the nationwide "Call to Protect" program, and will distribute cell phones to Orange County battered women's shelters. The organization will spend the next two months collecting old cell phones that will be reprogrammed to dial 911 and the number of a domestic violence shelter. Irvine's Soroptimist chapter will work in conjunction with Verizon, a Irvine-based cellular communications provider.

More than a dozen members of Soroptimist International will distribute fliers Oct. 6 to warn working women about domestic violence. Homicide, often by husbands or boyfriends, is the leading cause of on-the-job deaths for women, said spokeswoman Pam Wright, a lawyer who specializes in domestic violence. She said nearly all battered women experience problems on the job, including coming in late and missing work days. Some have trouble functioning amid repeated calls from their abuser.

Evelyn Huang of Marina High School won first place in the annual Youth Citizenship Awards competition sponsored by Soroptimist International of Westminster. She completed more than 600 hours of volunteer work, including tutoring children, doing errands for the elderly and participating in American Red Cross blood drives. Huang was awarded $500 to use toward her college education. Eric Mason of La Quinta High School won second place in the contest.

Irvine student Jane Chin Deng, 17, a University High School senior, and Grace Hung Wu, 40, an Irvine resident, will be honored with others by Soroptimist International of Irvine at its annual awards banquet Tuesday at the Holiday Inn in Irvine. Jane was named first-place winner of the Youth Citizenship Award for outstanding contributions to home, school, community, country and the world. Wu won first place in the Training Award, given to promote upward mobility in mature women.

The City Council received $27,000 from the Soroptimist International of Westminster to be used for an education volunteer program. Senior citizens help 65 elementary school students with their homework as part of the Safety, Health, Understanding and Education project that takes place after school Monday through Friday. They are Martha Miiko Nakagawa of Gardena High School and Derek John Honore of Junipero Serra High School. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by young people to home, school, community and country.

A women's health conference received a $1,000 grant recently from Orange County Supervisor Charles V. Smith. Smith, using available discretionary funds, awarded Soroptimist International of Santa Ana the money to put on a health conference Oct. 17 at Santa Ana College. Soroptimist requested the money in a letter to Smith in August.
