Rock reunions shouldn't sound as good as Soundgarden does these days. Since splintering in the '90s, the band's recent reunion shows proved that the curious alchemy between Chris Cornell's rock deity voice, Matt Cameron's time-twisting drums and Kim Thayil's fiery leads remain intact, and that chemistry remains on the shockingly not disappointing album "King Animal. " Odds are the new material as well as favorites such as "My Wave," "Rusty Cage" and "Hunted Down" will churn with the same menacing grandeur here.

Rock 'n' roll has a way of romanticizing the tortured and the libertines, especially ones with a little poetry in them. Singer Greg Dulli, whose band Afghan Whigs returns Tuesday with its first new album in 16 years, "Do to the Beast," clearly has a cultural standing to uphold. Booked for this month's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the indie rock veterans are the festival's older, musically adventurous misanthropes, but misanthropes nevertheless. Yet his reignited passion to get the old band back together came from an unlikely place.  Last year Dulli was unexpectedly asked if the Afghan Whigs would appear with Usher at the South by Southwest music festival and conference in Austin, Texas.  PHOTOS: Coachella Day 1  |  Day 2  |  Day 3 "We had 48 hours to put together a show with someone we had never met," said Dulli, 48. "I had only spoken to him on the phone.

Soundgarden's well-received returning tour last year must have been a pleasure for the band as well. The canonical '90s heavy rockers have announced a forthcoming album, " King Animal ," due out this fall. The news comes via a brief video montage of the band in-studio and onstage during this recent round of touring, plus a clip of a new tune called "Worse Dreams. " The song's Sabbath-y riffage and dueling lead lines suggest the band hasn't lost a step in its pursuit of sludgy transcendence.

"Superunknown" A&M * * * 1/2 Even before people knew there was a Seattle scene, Soundgarden was being touted as stars of the future. Well, it took them seven years of recording, but they finally get it right with this unruly beast of an album. "Superunknown's" effect is diffuse and poetically hazy, as opposed to their friendly rivals Pearl Jam's immediate, galvanizing approach.

Dave Grohl flexed some serious directorial chops for his documentary "Sound City," conducting interviews with a bevy of A-list rock stars and somehow making a dusty old recording console seem like an object worth caring about . The Foo Fighters frontman even arranged a jam session with no less than Sir Paul McCartney. But Grohl may have outdone himself with a new Soundgarden music video he directed in which the perpetually dour grunge-rock veterans appear to be having -- yes, it's true -- a good time.

Of all the bands that emerged from Seattle's so-called grunge scene in the early 1990s - think of the moody, flannel-clad likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains - none was harder to pin down than Soundgarden. Brutish but thoughtful, muscular yet deeply melodic, the group's music resisted easy classification, just as frontman Chris Cornell seemed to defy attempts to parse his densely allusive lyrics. Even the band's biggest hit, "Black Hole Sun," which cracked the top 10 of Billboard's pop-radio chart in 1994, remains a mystery from its opening couplet on: "In my eyes, indisposed / In disguises no one knows.

The stage at the Palace for Soundgarden's concert on Wednesday was festooned with mandala-like designs and Fillmore-lettered logos, and strobe lights greeted the foursome's clamorous entrance. There's a dose of irony in Soundgarden's acid-era iconography, but along with it comes a genuine savor for the concept of mind-blowing as a noble calling.

Who asked Richard Cromelin to critique Audioslave's musical direction ["A Potential That Needs Nurturing," June 5]? While Cromelin gives the band's latest, "Out of Exile," three stars, his actual "review" is merely an opinion on where the band should be headed rather than a critique of the actual musical work. Cromelin describes the band's sound as "some Rage and some Soundgarden," even though the new material bears little resemblance to either Soundgarden or Rage Against the Machine.

Aubrey Plaza: Her name may sound a little like the setting for the next "Die Hard" movie, but ever since watching this comic actress steal scenes in Judd Apatow's "Funny People" she's become a face to watch. Her deader-than-deadpan delivery is a highlight on NBC's "Parks and Recreation," but seeing her smart, spot-on impersonation of Sarah Silverman's shock comedy on YouTube shows she's got more going on than just a dryly detached delivery. Soundgarden: Given all Chris Cornell has done to make everyone forget he has one of the best voices in rock (ill-advised Timbaland collaboration, anyone?

Chris Cornell introduced his two-hour concert Wednesday at Avalon Hollywood by telling the audience that he intended to play "old songs, new songs and in-between songs." He's got a lot of each: For most of the '90s, Cornell served as the frontman of Soundgarden, one of the most successful bands to come out of Seattle's grunge scene. When that group broke up, Cornell put out "Euphoria Morning," a solo album that traded Soundgarden's thinking-man's metal for psychedelic folk-rock.
