South Africa has cut ties with Taiwan in favor of the more powerful Beijing and has abandoned attempts to have diplomatic relations with both entities. China considers Taiwan a renegade province and will not establish diplomatic relations with any country that recognizes an independent Taiwan. At a news conference in Johannesburg, South African President Nelson Mandela expressed his regret and said his government will maintain nondiplomatic ties with Taiwan.
