Andrew Maggs described it later as "something out of an Oliver Stone movie." Maggs, a consultant promoting South African businesses abroad, had taken 14 white Johannesburg businessmen to Lagos, Nigeria, for deal-making, preliminary to the expected lifting of anti-apartheid sanctions by the Nigerian government later this year. After three days of meetings in their hotel, the South Africans decided to see the town. They drove straight into the worst riots in Lagos in decades.
