If South Florida receiver Carlton Mitchell happens to find the NFL too tough, he certainly can't complain to his mother. "She started with a few amateur fights, and then has always been very close to Antonio Tarver. I don't know exactly how it worked out, but all of a sudden she's working his corner.

Vultures circled over Everglades National Park's Anhinga Trail, where thousands of dead nonnative fish floated in the marshes. And in western Miami-Dade County, three African rock pythons -- powerful constrictors that can kill people -- have turned up dead. Although South Florida's warm, moist climate has nurtured a vast range of nonnative plants and animals, a January cold snap reminded these intruders that they're not in Burma or Ecuador anymore.

Instead of getting even with Rutgers, No. 23 South Florida didn't even get on the scoreboard for the first time in a regular-season game in its 13-year history. Tom Savage threw for two touchdowns and Rutgers forced four turnovers, blocked a punt and recorded seven sacks in embarrassing the error-prone Bulls, 31-0, in a nationally televised game on Thursday night. The victory was the fourth straight for Rutgers (7-2, 2-2 Big East) over South Florida (6-3, 2-3), and this one made the Scarlet Knights bowl eligible for the fifth straight season.

Once again, South Florida had all the answers for slowing down West Virginia. B.J. Daniels threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns, and the Bulls rebounded from two subpar defensive performances to frustrate running back Noel Devine and the 20th-ranked Mountaineers in a 30-19 victory Friday night at Tampa, Fla. The Bulls (6-2, 2-2 Big East) gave up 75 points and 887 yards in conference losses to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh the previous two weeks, yet found a way to hold Devine to his lowest rushing total of the season.
