A man who was wounded in a car-to-car shooting in South Los Angeles before driving to an entrance at USC has died at a hospital, authorities said. Adrian Dawson, 22, died around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at California Hospital Medical Center, Los Angeles County coroner's spokesman Ed Winter said. The shooting occurred near 57th and Hoover streets , roughly three miles from the campus Wednesday afternoon, said Los Angeles police spokesman Richard French. The man was then driven to 36th Place and Vermont Avenue, near the university's Gate 6 entrance, said LAPD Officer Wendy Reyes.

An elderly woman who died of smoke inhalation from a fire in her South Los Angeles home early Saturday was described by a family member as a "caring and giving person" who had lived in the home since the 1940s. Anna Brooks, 98, was rescued from her South Park home by firefighters and transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said. The fire in the 200 block of East 47th Place broke out about 3:40 a.m. and was brought under control by more than 50 firefighters in less than 20 minutes, said Erik Scott, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A man was found on a South Los Angeles sidewalk early Friday morning with a single gunshot wound to the head, police said, marking the first homicide of the year for Vermont Square. The body was found near the intersection of West 53rd Street and South Budlong Avenue at about 2 a.m. after Los Angeles police officers responded to calls of shots fired. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. HOMICIDE REPORT: A story for every victim An official with the Los Angeles County coroner's office said the man has not been identified.  The man was approximately 25 years old, said LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman.

Los Angeles police on Thursday night released a photo of a person of interest in a hit-and-run incident that left a 19-year-old man dead. Jerry Arrendondo was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a 2013 black Camaro that was speeding east on 105th Street near Wadsworth Avenue in South Los Angeles, police said. The driver of the Camaro struck Arrendondo and then hit several other vehicles before the driver and a passenger bailed out of the Camaro and ran away, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Los Angeles police traffic detectives are searching for a male driver involved in multiple hit-and-run accidents that left a 19-year-old man dead in South Los Angeles. Coroner officials identified the victim as Jerry Arredondo Jr. of Los Angeles.   The fatal vehicle collision occurred Tuesday about 7:30 p.m. near 105th Street and Wadsworth Avenue, according to LAPD Officer Bruce Borihahn. The male driver of a 2013 Chevy Camaro was traveling east on 105th Street at a high rate of speed when his car struck and killed Arredondo, who was exiting his parked car on the same street, Borihahn said.

Police were looking Tuesday night for a driver who struck and killed a 19-year-old man and then fled the scene in South Los Angeles. The hit-and-run incident was reported about 7 p.m. after a man in a dark newer-model Camaro was seen speeding and driving erratically near 105th Street and Wadsworth Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The driver struck the man, who was walking on the street, and then plowed into at least three cars, the LAPD said. The driver took off running.

Police on Monday night identified a man killed in a South Los Angeles shooting as 37-year-old Sigmund Thomas Chornes. Chornes was shot around 9:40 p.m. Sunday while standing near the sidewalk in the 4000 block of Abourne Road, the Los Angeles Police Department said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Chornes had been visiting friends and left a home when he was attacked by a man who stepped from the passenger's side of a light-colored SUV and began shooting, the LAPD said.  HOMICIDE REPORT: A story for every victim The man got back in the SUV, which was seen heading westbound on Santo Tomas Drive.  The shooting was being investigated by LAPD gang detectives.

A defense lawyer described how his client threw a chair at a prosecutor and LAPD detective in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday, leaving the officer dazed and injured. Bob Horner said he was looking away when his client, who is on trial for murder, grabbed a heavy metal chair and flung it across the courtroom. He said the crash of the chair's landing was so loud that he initially thought someone in the audience might have shot at his client. "I heard this enormous bang," said Horner, who is a partner in a Beverly Hills-based law firm.

A 36-year-old Los Angeles man was fatally struck by a vehicle Sunday night on the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles, authorities said.
