Former Northwestern basketball teammates Kenneth Dion Lee and Dewey Williams were sentenced to a month in jail by a federal judge today for taking part in a game-fixing betting scheme in 1995. Former Notre Dame kicker Kevin Pendergast, who pleaded guilty to paying bribes, was sentenced to two months in prison and two years' probation. Lee admitted he took $4,000 in bribes to fix three games. Williams also acknowledged taking money. U.S.

Andrew Cheney and Brett Lucas of UC Irvine defeated Cory Guy and Simon Chen of UC Santa Barbara to advance to the doubles quarterfinals of the Southern California Intercollegiates tournament Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Club. Cheney and Lucas, who won 8-6, play Brandon Kramer and Jong Minle today. In nonconference men's basketball: Montana State 84, Concordia 73--Guard Josh Giles scored 22 points for Concordia (2-2).

Tony Luftman, a fifth-year history major at UCLA, will be the play-by-play announcer for Southern California College men's basketball games this season. The games can be heard on Broadcast.Com, one of the Internet's top 20 web sites. Luftman was invited to broadcast the games by current SCC men's Coach Cameron Dollar, who played at UCLA when Luftman was the team manager. It is the first time in the school's 78-year history the games will be broadcast.

By some measures, Southern California College, a small Christian college in Costa Mesa, has been a university for several years. With master's programs in education, religion and family counseling, and independent admissions and financial aid programs for each, the college already had expanded far beyond its liberal arts designation. On Tuesday, administrators announced that the 78-year-old college would become Vanguard University of Southern California as of July.

Cameron Dollar is 22 years old and a head college basketball coach. Yes, sometimes Dollar takes the towels home to launder, and he'll probably be driving a lot of vans on trips this winter. Dollar thinks he's younger than "six or seven" players on his team, and his office is decorated mostly with unpacked boxes, even though he started work at Southern California College in Costa Mesa in April.

Southern California College posted its first conference victory this season by defeating Cal Baptist, 3-1, in a Golden State Athletic Conference men's soccer game Tuesday at SCC. SCC (6-7, 1-2 in conference) scored two second-half goals, breaking a 1-1 halftime tie when Diego Goni scored his ninth goal in the 65th minute. Cal Baptist is 2-7-4, 0-3.

Southern California College's Isis Gonzalez finished second in the 200 meters at the Golden State Athletic Conference women's track and field championships at Point Loma Nazarene. Cal Baptist's Heather Hanchak finished first with a time of 25.54 seconds. Gonzalez finished in 26.38. Gonzalez also finished third in the 400 in 1:00.11. Teammate Monica Landa finished fifth in the 5,000 (18:20.76). Point Loma leads the competition after the first day with 94 points.
