It's the age of the customized commuter. At least, that's the vision of Rapid Transit District officials. In the latest move to encourage more drivers to leave their cars at home, the RTD announced Tuesday a computerized planning service that gives commuters a tailor-made schedule for taking the bus from home to work and back. "It's a whole new way of reaching out and touching someone," RTD spokesman James Smart said at a news conference Tuesday.

A transit bus driver pulled over his vehicle in Sherman Oaks because he was suffering from chest pains, and as a passenger telephoned for help, youths ripped apart and spray-painted the interior of the bus, officials said Wednesday. Erwin N. Jones, former superintendent of the Covina-Valley Unified School District, has been appointed to the Southern California Rapid Transit District board. The 61-year-old Covina resident was named to the 11-member governing board by Los Angeles County Supervisor Pete Schabarum. He replaced Leonard Panish, a management consultant who resigned to devote more time to his business.

Hoping to squelch a growing controversy, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday voted unanimously to establish a panel to investigate whether to construct two headquarters buildings. The MTA is the result of a merger between the county's two feuding transit agencies, the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission and the Southern California Rapid Transit District.

A fixed-route bus service will begin this summer in Azusa to augment the existing bus routes of Southern California Rapid Transit District service and the local Dial-a-Ride. City Administrator Lloyd Wood said the route will make a loop through this city of 34,000 people and will operate seven days a week. Two 30-passenger buses have been ordered.

County transit officials have chosen these 12 bus routes for conversions to electric trolley buses from standard diesel buses. The Southern California Rapid Transit District is seeking public comment. Electric trolley buses are quieter and less polluting than diesel buses, but need overhead electric wires supported by poles. County officials have promised to plant thousands of trees to mask the wires and make sidewalks more pleasant.

Privately run Foothill Transit has taken over two bus lines, 486 and 488, formerly run by the Southern California Rapid Transit District, officials said Monday. Foothill Transit began servicing the lines Sunday, completing a 1988 Los Angeles Transportation Commission plan for them to take over 14 RTD lines. The two lines run from Puente Hills Mall and Glendora/West Covina to downtown Los Angeles. Foothill Transit regularly serves the Pomona and San Gabriel valleys.

The Southern California Rapid Transit District has begun distributing 1.3 million tokens for free bus rides in its largest-ever effort to boost sagging ridership. The first 50,000 tokens are being distributed at most Boys Market stores to shoppers making a minimum purchase of $5. Customers of El Pollo Loco restaurants and other retail outlets will receive the tokens in promotions beginning in March. Sample tokens also will appear in La Opinion, the city's largest Spanish-language newspaper.

With five of its 11 members absent, the Southern California Rapid Transit District Board of Directors on Thursday again postponed action on whether to hire sheriff's deputies, rather than use its own transit police, to protect the new Long Beach-Los Angeles light-rail line. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department said that if a decision is not reached by Tuesday, deputies will not have enough time to adequately prepare for the July 16 opening of the 22-mile Blue Line trolley.

Bus lines are becoming the battleground for a new generation of violent taggers called tag-bangers. Unlike their predecessors, who mainly scribbled graffiti, today's tag-bangers are also involved in the mayhem associated with traditional street gangs. With names such as NBT, or Nothing But Trouble, and WDC, or We Don't Care, crews of tag-bangers have declared the bus lines their territory and defend them passionately, said police investigator Roy Romero, the RTD's expert on taggers.

Crime on bus lines in Central Los Angeles has more than tripled since 1988, but that's no surprise to Vivian Cockrell. Last month, five young thugs stormed the bus Cockrell was riding one night, stuck a gun to her face and robbed her and six other passengers before disappearing on a dark side street in Watts. "I thought that was it," Cockrell recalled on a recent night, as she and her two young children waited at a dimly lighted bus stop near 108th Street and Vermont Avenue.

A man in a transit district uniform walked into an RTD office in East Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon and stole 90 payroll checks worth an estimated $100,000, officials said. The theft, believed to have been committed by a present or former employee, occurred after 4 p.m., said Sgt. Paul Bryson of the Southern California Rapid Transit District's detective bureau.

The Los Angeles County Superior Court put an end to a longtime bus war between two competing agencies in the San Gabriel Valley when it ruled Tuesday in favor of Foothill Transit Zone. The lawsuit came about because two transit agencies--the Southern California Rapid Transit District and Foothill--had been serving the San Gabriel Valley.
