Facing loaded fields in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Khalfani Muhammad of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame wanted to give his competition something to think about heading into next week's state track and field championships. The Knights' junior sprinter did just that — winning both events in Friday night's CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College and positioning himself as one of the favorites after also doubling at the Southern Section Division 3 finals the week before. First, Muhammad ran the 100 in 10.51 seconds, beating San Clemente's Herbert Gamboa by eight-hundredths of a second.

The wrestling coaches at Monroe High earned a well-deserved rest at the conclusion of the season. Daily sparring sessions with 215-pound Arthur Bryan wore down Coach Tom Jones and staff. "We're still recovering," Jones said. Bryan, The Times' regional wrestler of the year, was equally tough on opponents. Most wrestlers failed to get past the first round against Bryan, a senior who compiled a 46-3 record with 37 pins. He finished his career 117-21.

Wrestling has been less than a charming experience for Tim Ige of Capistrano Valley High School. Injuries have plagued him throughout his career, and it looked like they would get the better of him again at Saturday's Southern Section Masters Wrestling Championships at Westminster High School. Ige busted open his lip in a Thursday practice session and had reopened the gash during his first-round match Saturday. "I was swallowing so much blood I started to choke," Ige said. Three years ago, El Camino Real High's Edward Lemus was a struggling, overweight 14-year-old, giving it his all just to make the freshman football team. In the span of several hours Friday night, Susannah Thrasher won a Southern Section track title, taking six seconds off her career-best time in the process, and was named queen of her senior prom at Villa Park High School. A magical evening, to be sure. Thrasher had not expected to be named prom queen, but the track title--the 3-A 1,600 meters--was a bit less surprising, considering it was something Thrasher had been working toward for the past three years.
