For Courtney Pugmire of Esperanza, the Master's Meet at Cerritos College Friday night meant not only another pair of victories, but also an Orange County record and a spot in the state record books. Pugmire, a senior, ran away from Agoura's Amy Skieresz for the second consecutive week in the 3,200 meters, winning in 10 minutes 14.48 seconds. She advances to the State meet at Cerritos next week.

You can either be a very good high school sprinter or a great high school hurdler. Casey Jones, a co-coach at Quartz Hill High, told Michelle Perry that at the end of the 1994 track season, and entering tonight's Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College, Perry appears to have decided on the hurdles. The transition hasn't been easy for Perry, a standout age-group sprinter who placed fifth in the 100 and 200 meters in last year's Southern Section Division I championships as a freshman.

A tactical error cost Jason Barreda the Mission League 1,600-meter title. But the Loyola High senior didn't make the same mistake in the Southern Section finals May 21 at Veterans Stadium. Barreda won the Division III title in 4 minutes 20.97 seconds, pulling away with a 61-second final 400 to win the event for the second year in a row. He is only the second Loyola athlete to repeat as Southern Section champion.

Don't tell Newport Harbor throwing coach Tony Ciarelli that three is a crowd. Sailor throwers Wade Tift, Steve Gonzales and Gina Heads advanced to next week's State meet by finishing in the top five in their events. Tift, who finished fourth in the shot put last season at State, cruised to victory Friday in the Masters Meet at Cerritos College. The UCLA-bound senior put the shot 59 feet 8 1/2 inches on his second of four attempts to win by over two feet.

James Castaneda's season almost ended two weeks ahead of schedule. Castaneda, from Alemany High and the only area wrestler still undefeated, needed overtime to win his semifinal 112-pound match in the Southern Section Division IV tournament last weekend. But with the win, Castaneda (34-0) clinched a berth in the Masters meet today at Fountain Valley High. Preliminary bouts will start at 9:30 a.m., finals at 4 p.m. The meet combines wrestlers from all four divisions of the Southern Section.
