With Stanley Johnson experiencing a rare off game, unbeaten Santa Ana Mater Dei High turned to 6-foot-10 sophomore M.J. Cage, who delivered 24 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks to help the Monarchs defeat Riverside North, 62-49, in a Southern Section Open Division semifinal boys' basketball game Tuesday night. If North (26-3) can take any solace, it's that the Huskies gave the Monarchs (30-0) a real scare, putting together a 15-0 run to take a 31-29 lead midway through the third quarter on a three-pointer by Dikymbe Martin.

Lights, camera, action! It's time for some arbitration hardball. Attorneys representing four private schools and the CIF Southern Section will gather Tuesday and Wednesday to present their arguments as part of a binding arbitration hearing to determine whether Ventura St. Bonaventure, Westlake Village Oaks Christian, La Verne Damien and Glendora St. Lucy's will have to switch sports leagues in the fall. It's similar to one of those Major League Baseball arbitration hearings, in which the team and the player each submit a contract figure and the arbitrator chooses one. In this case, each school will present its arguments, the Southern Section will present its response and the arbitrator will make a decision within a week.

Wearing a hoodie in pregame warmups, Stanley Johnson was smiling, dancing and even singing a hip-hop song blaring over the public address system Friday night at Lakewood Mayfair. The 6-foot-7 All-American from Santa Ana Mater Dei left little doubt how much he enjoys playoff time. Four seconds into the Southern Section Open Division quarterfinal playoff game, he took a lob pass and dunked. It was just the beginning of another memorable performance from a player who is headed to legendary status in Mater Dei lore.
