Charles Frazier has become the 50,000th student to enroll at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Tex., which claims to be the world's largest theology school. The 27-year-old native of Lithia Springs, Ga., made history when he enrolled for the fall semester at 9 a.m. Aug. 26. The event coincides with the celebration of the seminary's 80th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of the presidency of the Rev. Russell Dilday.

A theologically conservative California pastor who says he avoids the partisan battles in the Southern Baptist Convention will be nominated Monday for the presidency of the denomination's Golden Gate Theological Seminary. An informed source said the search committee will nominate Riverside Pastor William Crews, 50, a seminary trustee for four years and a member of the 22-member "peace committee" seeking to resolve fundamentalist-moderate rivalries in the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

James W. McClendon Jr., 76, theologian, educator and author of volumes on Baptist religious history and thought. A native of Shreveport, La., McClendon served in the Navy during World War II and earned degrees from the University of Texas, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Princeton Theological Seminary.

The Southern Baptist Convention quit a global federation of Baptist denominations Tuesday as its leaders denounced the Baptist World Alliance and other groups for accepting liberal theology. At a meeting that affirmed the Southern Baptists' conservative values 25 years after its rightward shift began, more than 8,000 people also cheered as President Bush -- speaking through a live video link -- stressed his support for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

The Rev. Earl Stallings, a white clergyman who was praised by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in his famous "Letter From Birmingham Jail," has died. He was 89. Stallings, the former pastor of First Baptist Church of Birmingham, Ala., died Feb. 23 at a retirement home in Lakeland, Fla., the Associated Baptist Press reported on its website.

The Jesus Seminar, a controversial group of scholars that evaluates the New Testament in the harsh light of historical review, has concluded that there is no evidence that the Easter Resurrection was a physical reality. More likely, they decided, the story of the historical Jesus ended with his death on the cross and the decay of his body. The scholars also agreed that there probably was no tomb and that Jesus' body probably was disposed of by his crucifiers--not his followers.

Rick Stanley is 43, a year older than Elvis Presley when he died nearly 20 years ago. That's important. Stanley, Presley's stepbrother, was the last family member to see Presley alive. In their final meeting, Presley told the young man he should listen to his girlfriend, who had prayed for his salvation. Eight hours later, Presley was dead. Two months later, Stanley was born again. Today, he's an ordained Southern Baptist minister who speaks almost every Sunday, someplace.

Friends and strangers both hurting and hopeful turned to Scripture on a Saturday "of phenomenal sadness and mourning" to remember victims cut down in the most sacred of places--a house of worship. The funerals for four of the seven victims were the first held as a result of Wednesday night's massacre at Wedgwood Baptist Church. Gunman Larry Gene Ashbrook killed seven people before committing suicide.

Conservatives who won the battle for control of the Southern Baptist Convention are finding the strife is not over in the nation's largest Protestant denomination. The firing of a popular seminary president and the growing strength of a splinter group have placed the Southern Baptist Convention at its most significant crossroads since the conservative takeover of the denomination, some observers say.
