Beau Bridges and his wife, Wendy, have sold their home in gated Hidden Hills for $2.4 million - twice what they originally paid. The sale was a while in the making, however. They first listed the country English-style house for sale in 2010 at $3.25 million and later turned to leasing. Designed by architect Marshall Lewis and built in 1976, the ivy-covered house has a sunken den with a fireplace, a bar, a family room, a billiard area, an office, an ample wine cellar, a sauna, six bedrooms and six bathrooms in about 6,800 square feet of living space.

Mulholland Drive isn't just any serpentine, 55-mile-long Los Angeles byway. It's a launching point for local hikers. It inspired David Lynch's 2001 dream-like movie about amnesia and an attempted murder. And it's got Hollywood real estate cred: Jack Nicholson lives there, as did the late Marlon Brando. So it was no surprise to former bank executive Yaffa Koresh that R&B star Mary J. Blige decided to rent Koresh's remodeled, ultramodern Mulholland Drive home last year.

It isn't a palm-studded grouping of islands such as the traveler would find in the Caribbean or South Seas, but 10 islands in Lake Erie just off Sandusky are warmly pleasant into fall and less expensive to get to. They stretch for 16 miles across the lake. Four miles off Catawba Point on the mainland are the Bass Islands: South, Middle and North, with their satellites of Gibraltar, Sugar, Ballast and several smaller isles. Six miles east is Kelleys Island. North of it across the U.S.

Steve Martin cornered Tom Hanks at a party a few months ago and asked the two-time Oscar winner the question that has occurred at least once to any perceptive moviegoer. "You've become this great actor," Martin, a fellow funny-man turned actor-director-writer, said to Hanks. "I'm curious what took you there. What did you do?"
