Spaceland was struck by a pair of Red Hot Chili Peppers last week, who treated the jubilant crowd to Joy Division covers. Both Flea and John Frusciante played with their hearts on their sleeves to help raise money for a new Eastside children's co-op. A Clubland uber-vixen tells us Keanu Reeves kicked down a mighty six-figure sum that night, too. That's what I like to hear--a bit of '60s-style activism.

Noise-rock in L.A. is having quite a star turn lately with the ascent of local heroes No Age, but hopefully there's still room on the bandwagon for the local duo Hecuba, whose brand of avant-garde is more tribal and immersive than spazzy and abrasive. Their latest, "Sir," is built on thick peals of electronics, sassy vocals and a wickedly gloomy sense of humor. With this month's weekly residents Warpaint. 8:30 p.m., Spaceland, 1717 Silver Lake Blvd., free, (323) 661-4380.

Do you know Neil Hamburger? I think he's very funny. He writes such cutting jokes. I'm a fan of characters and I like things that are a little beyond reality. I like a little razzle-dazzle. Have you ever seen him? He's this guy named Gregg Turkington, who's this cool hipster guy who plays this old vaudeville kind of salty, greasy [guy] ? he wears a suit and tells these one-liners, as people usually boo or are confused. He has a show at Spaceland once a month. And he was just on tour with Tim and Eric.

The music of the Clientele is defined by its shimmering mystery, by reverb-heavy single-note guitar and breathy, vaguely John Lennon-ish vocals. But one of the most enduring mysteries surrounding the group is why this most British of acts -- a band whose sound seems to emerge from a cloudy green countryside and whose very name is impossible to pronounce properly without an English accent (it's Clee-entele) -- has its biggest following in the States. To singer-guitarist Alasdair MacLean, 35, it's "really annoying" but, in some ways, quite logical.
