An auction next week at Camarillo's Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club will help send several area high school students to college. The Ventura County branch of the National Human Resources Assn. will host its second annual silent auction at the club Wednesday. Money raised will fund two or three college scholarships, each worth $1,000, for local high school seniors interested in careers in business or human resources. About 60 items, including vacation packages, will be auctioned.

A local charity golf tournament has raised $45,000 to benefit Casa Pacifica, a temporary shelter for abused and neglected children. More than 100 golfers participated in the sixth annual Care for Kids Golf Classic on Monday at Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club. When the fund-raiser began, Rotary Club members in Camarillo made a commitment to raise $250,000 over a five-year period. Although the group was one year off the mark, the goal has been met this year.

Only six of the 151 pricey residential lots at Camarillo's Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club have been sold so far, but 450 country club memberships have been sold, according to the development's marketing coordinator, Ty McCutcheon. The one-acre-plus lots start at $290,000 and go up to $650,000. Members' initiation fees range from $2,000 to $55,000, depending on privileges. "Some people think we're crazy, selling lots at these prices in this market," McCutcheon said.

A Simi Valley resident has been arrested on suspicion of fraud after allegedly billing Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club for food that was never delivered. Jarrett Craig Inkeles billed the Camarillo country club for $207,976 worth of food products never delivered to the club's restaurant, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. Inkeles, who allegedly used the alias Jerry Craig, operated both Royal Food Sales and Oxnard Specialties, authorities said.

A San Juan Capistrano developer and a Japanese construction company said Thursday that they have bought 430 acres in Camarillo, where they will sell land for houses around a lavish 18-hole golf course and country club. Pacific Land & Golf Inc. and Sato Kogyo America Corp. said the land purchase--estimated to have cost about $45 million--is thought to be one of the largest ever in Ventura County.

Cascades Golf Club in Sylmar, the first new public golf course within the Los Angeles city limits since 1975, opens today. Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys opened July 2, 1975. Cascades is a par-71, 6,600-yard layout designed by Rupert Cupp, architect of Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club in Camarillo. Introductory greens fees are $50 with a cart through January.
