A high-ranking Metrolink executive resigned over the weekend following a scathing report that revealed accounting irregularities, poor management and record-keeping that made it difficult for board members to understand the railroad's financial situation. Metrolink officials said Monday that Nancy Weiford, the regional commuter line's chief financial officer, stepped down after a special committee assigned to look into the railroad's business practices revealed its findings at Friday's board meeting.

The union representing police in Westminster has sued the city and its police chief for instituting a policy that officers contend can be used to pull them off of coveted "special assignments" and cut their pay. The Westminster Police Officers' Assn. said it was never consulted before Police Chief James Cook issued a 1994 memo that limited special assignments to three years, with two additional years possible.

Oklahoma University regents today approved the hiring of Gary Gibbs as head football coach and gave Barry Switzer, who resigned Monday, a $225,000 settlement. Gibbs, who has spent his entire collegiate coaching career as an assistant at the university, was given a salary of $88,000. The settlement for Switzer included a $145,000 lump payment on June 1, 1990. It also provided that Switzer will be paid a salary of $7,250 a month while on "special assignment" until Feb. 1. Switzer resigned following six months of turmoil after the school received a three-year NCAA probation and five players were charged in incidents involving guns, drugs and sexual assault.

A recent article ("Heat From Asteroids Killed Early Life Forms, Scientists Say," Science/Medicine, Nov. 13) reports that a team of researchers from Stanford University have determined "that a 260-mile-wide asteroid striking the Earth at a speed of 3,672 m.p.h would create so much heat that the oceans would boil dry." Because this is a calculation that students of introductory physics can perform, I have given it to my class as a special assignment. I wonder if they will confirm the results of my own calculations--that the correct figure for the required speed is, in fact, 3,673 m.p.h.
