Advanced Interventional Systems Inc. said Monday that it is suing a Colorado competitor over what it says are violations of four patents. The suit, filed Friday in federal court in Santa Ana, alleges that Spectranetics Corp. of Colorado Springs has infringed on Advanced Interventional's patents on the Excimer Laser. The device, unlike conventional lasers, emits a cold beam.

Advanced Interventional Systems Inc., which pioneered the use of laser catheters for heart angioplasty, said Thursday that it has agreed to merge its operations with a Colorado company in an exchange of stock that it valued at $26 million to $29 million. Shareholders of the Irvine company, which lost $9.9 million on $14 million in sales last year, would receive a 47% stake in a new company to be formed in a merger with Spectranetics Corp. in Colorado Springs. Both companies are publicly held.

Robert E. Wall, chairman and chief executive of medical laser marker Advanced Interventional Systems Inc., resigned Thursday in advance of a merger that apparently would have eliminated his job. Shares of Edwards Lifesciences Corp., an Irvine maker of cardiovascular disease treatments, hit a 52-week low of $12 a share during trading Wednesday as the stock continued to get pummeled two days after the company lowered its profit estimates for its fiscal fourth quarter. The stock ended the day at $13 a share, down 44 cents in New York Stock Exchange trading. Word of a favorable settlement in a patent infringement case apparently didn't rally investors.

Advanced Interventional Systems Inc., a maker of lasers for heart surgery, said Thursday it will lay off 30 workers in Irvine because of uncertainty over President Clinton's health plan and because it recently canceled its proposed merger with a Colorado medical devices firm. In addition, two company directors, Raymond Williams and Charles French, have resigned. The layoffs reduce the number of employees at the company's Irvine headquarters from 100 to about 70.

Advanced Interventional Systems Inc., a maker of surgical lasers for treating heart disease, said Friday that it is faced with a takeover attempt by a Colorado medical device firm--a day after the two companies broke off merger talks. Bob Wall, Advanced Interventional chief executive, said his company, which has been suffering from slow sales and market uncertainties over health care reform, received a buyout proposal from Spectranetics Corp. in Colorado Springs.
