Other Southern California players named to the first team were USC pitcher Barry Zito, USC catcher Eric Munson and Long Beach State pitcher Mike Gallo. Fullerton third baseman Ryan Owens was named to the second team and second baseman David Bacani was picked for the third team.

The other finalists are Florida State second baseman Marshall McDougall, Baylor pitcher-designated hitter Jason Jennings, Rice pitcher Mario Ramos and Alabama shortstop Andy Phillips. Oborn is batting .401 with 14 home runs and 79 runs batted in.

Cal State Fullerton's Spencer Oborn was named Big West Conference baseball player of the year and Titan catcher Stephenie Little was named conference softball player of the year when the teams were announced Tuesday. Oborn, a junior outfielder, had a 37-game hitting streak--one short of Fullerton's and the Big West's record--and finished among the top 10 in all 10 conference statistical categories. Long Beach State's Mike Gallo was named pitcher of the year.

It was only a day after his 37-game hitting streak ended one game short of tying the Big West Conference record. Spencer Oborn went four for five with three runs batted in Saturday, helping eighth-ranked Cal State Fullerton roll to a 12-5 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a conference game at Titan Field. Oborn, a junior left fielder, ripped a two-run home run and a run-scoring triple along with two singles. One of the singles was an infield hit he beat out in the sixth.

Leaving Brigham Young for Cal State Fullerton wasn't easy, even though Spencer Oborn decided it was in his best interest as a baseball player. His father had played football at BYU and his older sister was an All-American volleyball player there. Provo, Utah, where the campus is located, is a quaint college town at the foot of some of the best skiing around. "I liked everything about the school," Oborn said.

Cal State Fullerton's Spencer Oborn was named to Collegiate Baseball's All-American team announced Friday. Oborn, a junior outfielder batting .412, was a first-team selection along with USC pitcher Barry Zito and Pepperdine relief pitcher Jay Gehrke. Zito is 11-2 with a 3.46 earned-run average. Gehrke has 18 saves and an 0.62 ERA. Long Beach State pitcher Mike Gallo (10-2, 2.13 ERA) was a third-team pick.

Cal State Fullerton All-American outfielder Spencer Oborn has rejected an offer from the Chicago White Sox, and is scheduled to join the Anchorage Bucs in the Alaska summer collegiate league this week, Titan Coach George Horton said Tuesday. "We're optimistic at this point that he will be back with us next season," Horton said. The White Sox, who drafted Oborn in the 14th round, have until the start of fall classes at Fullerton to sign Oborn, a junior.

Spencer Oborn hit a two-run homer in the first inning and had a run-scoring single in the seventh to lead visiting Cal State Fullerton to a 5-3 nonconference victory over Loyola Marymount Wednesday. It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Titans (34-8), third-ranked in Collegiate Baseball. Oborn broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh with a one-out single, which drove in David Bacani. Oborn then stole second and eventually scored on Aaron Rifkin's RBI single.

Aaron Rifkin and Shawn Norris each hit two home runs to help Cal State Fullerton defeat host Sacramento State, 14-7, in a Big West Conference baseball game Sunday. Rifkin finished with five runs batted in and Norris had three for the Titans, who won their 11th consecutive game. Reed Johnson and Sean Bichofberger also hit home runs for the Titans.

Adam Johnson struck out nine in eight innings to help Cal State Fullerton defeat UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday in Santa Barbara. Johnson (7-2) gave up seven hits, two walks and one earned run. Kirk Saarloos pitched the ninth for Fullerton, ranked third in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Fullerton (36-8, 17-2 in conference) maintained its 4 1/2-game lead over second-place Nevada (26-14, 12-6), which defeated Sacramento State, 5-2, Friday.
