A decade after singling out the Spice Girls as fashion atrocities, Mr. Blackwell put just one of them -- Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham -- at the top of his 48th annual worst-dressed list. The acid-tongued critic, who was designing dresses for the rich and famous when he originated the list in 1960, skewered entertainment's biggest stars in the latest compilation of fashion follies released Tuesday. Insisting it's all in fun to encourage fashion consciousness, Blackwell heaped venom on Beckham.

It's 2007. Do you know where your Girl Power is? Riding a wave of nostalgia with a new greatest-hits CD and fresh product endorsements, the Spice Girls have come back into the spotlight with surprising vengeance. In 1996, their sex-sells marketing version of female empowerment made them a sort of mirror image of what the culture expected from women (that is, be tough but cute).

Geri Halliwell, otherwise known as Ginger Spice of the Spice Girls, always knew the British girl-power group would get together again but says she never imagined how much excitement a reunion would generate. Just weeks after announcing they were reforming seven years after they split, the mid-1990s pop sensations have had to add extra dates to their world tour to satisfy demand and may add still more as demand keeps rising. It has a certain ring to it: Sir David Beckham. It's the corollary -- Lady Victoria Beckham -- that gives pause. The former "Posh Spice" is one of several reasons Britons are ambivalent about rumored plans to give the Manchester-turned-Madrid-turned-Los Angeles soccer star a knighthood. Likewise, there's bemusement over informal talk of putting Beckham on the 20-pound note, a spot historically reserved for people such as the British monarch or economist Adam Smith.

Somehow, it was just meant to be. International soccer star David Beckham -- perhaps equally famous hereabouts as the husband of former pop singer "Posh" Spice -- announced Thursday in Madrid that he has agreed to a five-year, potential $250-million deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy, injecting a fresh shot of celebrity into a city where it is practiced as an art.

Officials plan to enforce a new dress code for scantily clad women who sell betel nut at more than 1,000 roadside stands in the northern county of Taoyuan, a police spokesman said. Starting Oct. 15, the women--called la meizi, or "spice girls" in local slang--won't be allowed to wear transparent or belly-revealing tops. Skimpy skirts and shorts are also out. "It's just too easy for drivers to have accidents as they turn to gawk at the women. We've already had many crashes," he said.

Only a few moments after a live broadcast of Fox's "American Idol" had gone off the air and the cameras had gone dark on the Hollywood sound stage where the series is taped, the already giddy level of the contestants vying for fame and fortune went into overdrive as they made a beeline for Simon. "How do you think we really sounded?" asked one "Idol" hopeful of the smiling British show-business mogul. "Does Madonna watch the show?" inquired another.
