Think of mid-size luxury SUVs as a stable of thoroughbreds. Porsche has its Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz its ML and GL, and Audi its Q7. The Japanese brands have their X models: Acura's MDX, Lexus' GX and Infiniti's QX60. For 2014, two redesigned purebreds join the mix: BMW's third-generation X5, and Land Rover's second-generation Range Rover Sport. Each of the newcomers approaches this competitive segment - where prices range from $50,000 to $90,000 - with a different philosophy.

Amid mounting criticism of light trucks by environmentalists, Ford Motor Co. said Monday it will introduce sport utility vehicles and minivans this fall that pollute no more than passenger cars. Honda Motor Co. will recall 19,197 Acura MDX sport-utility vehicles equipped with all-wheel-drive to tighten bolts in the drive system. All of the vehicles were recently built and from the 2014 model year. Honda said it wants owners to bring the cars back to dealers so that mechanics can inspect the upscale SUVs to see if they need to tighten or replace bolts used to secure the propeller shaft, a component of the AWD system. During assembly, it is possible that one or more of the four bolts that attach a propeller shaft to a universal joint were not tightened properly.

Protests about the environmental and safety records of sport utility vehicles don't seem to be doing much to dissuade automakers from thinking that there's still a lot of life left in the SUV market. Major automakers including Ford, Volkswagen, Chrysler, Nissan, Hyundai and Honda all are planning to introduce new SUV models in the next few years. Up soonest, though, is one from BMW, the X3, a "baby Bimmer" version of the company's successful X5 line of mid-size luxury SUVs.

Edward Gibbs, an advertising executive and confessed car nut, used to drive a Cadillac Allante, a $60,000 status symbol. These days, you'll find him behind the wheel of a bright red Jeep Grand Cherokee, the newest entry in a burgeoning sport utility market that is winning converts from luxury cars and kid-hauling minivans. Sport utilities, once the macho, rough-and-tumble trucks that drivers took on hunting and fishing trips, have gone upscale.

Hoping that the best years are not in the rear-view mirror for its Acura luxury line, American Honda Motor Co. is shifting into high gear for the introduction of its redesigned 2014 MDX sport utility vehicle. The U.S. sales arm of the Japanese automaker typically has kept a low advertising profile for Acura. But that's about to change. This week, American Honda in Torrance plans to roll out its largest-ever national advertising campaign for an Acura model, a marketing push that also is being closely watched in the Los Angeles advertising industry.

Lamar Odom leaned forward at lunch, his eyes bright, a smile on his face, as he explained his thoughts about the inner peace he has found. Honda said it will expand a March headlight recall to include 820,000 model-year 2002-2003 Civic sedans and model-year 2004-2005 Pilot sport-utility vehicles in the United States. Honda dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace components of the headlight wiring system. The automaker said a problem with the wiring of the headlight switch could cause the low-beam headlights to not work. The loss of headlights could limit a driver's ability to see the road and potential hazards and increases the risk of a crash.

Though it's been around since 2002, the Cayenne S has finally earned its Porsche crest with the 2011 rendition. When the company decided to call its SUV the Cayenne, it probably had no idea how apt the moniker would be. The mere idea that Porsche would relent to consumers' infatuation with sport utility vehicles elicited a reaction from Porsche purists not unlike eating a tablespoon of the namesake pepper: a red face, a sweaty brow, a fit of...
