Sports Club Co. agreed to sell its Spectrum Club fitness center chain in Southern California to Brentwood Associates for $49 million to focus on expanding its other line of fitness clubs. Los Angeles-based Sports Club, which operates health and fitness clubs in California, New York and Nevada, said it will open six Sports Club/LA centers in New York, Washington, Boston, San Francisco and Houston in the next two years. Two New York centers are expected to open early next year.

Sports Club Co. said Monday that it acquired Racquetball World health and fitness clubs in Fullerton, Santa Ana, Fountain Valley and Canoga Park for $17 million. Los Angeles-based Sports Club, which operates 14 upscale health and fitness clubs under the Sports Club and Spectrum names, said $10 million of the purchase price was funded by an affiliate of Millennium LP. Millennium acquired property underlying two of the clubs, which it will lease to the company for $1 million per year.

Los Angeles-based Gold's Gym owns one Gold's Gym in Venice and a related company that acts as a franchiser to about 550 Gold's Gyms worldwide. The franchise operations had 1996 revenue of about $2.6 million.

After consensus about the number of parking spaces required, approval was granted Monday for an upscale gym in the northwest Valley. Albert Landini, associate zoning administrator for the Department of City Planning, approved a zone variance for the Spectrum Club Fitness Center allowing fewer parking spots. The club must provide 322 parking spaces for the 52,000-square-foot facility, to be built on the corner of Prairie Street and Corbin Avenue in Northridge.

Sports Club Co. of Los Angeles said Thursday it signed a letter of intent to acquire the Los Caballeros Racquet & Sports Club, a Fountain Valley fitness and racquet club. Terms weren't disclosed. Sports Club, which operates upscale health and fitness clubs, said it expects the acquisition to be finalized by Jan.31. Los Caballeros Racquet & Sports Club had $3.4 million in revenue in its last fiscal year. Sports Club had 1996 sales of $37.4 million.

The Sports Club Co. in Los Angeles has agreed to acquire the membership base and certain assets of Sporthouse Inc., which operates a health and fitness club in Thousand Oaks. "We expect to convert a substantial number of the Sporthouse members to our new Spectrum Club-Thousand Oaks when it opens later this month," said John M. Gibbons, president and chief operating officer. "Subject to the completion of this acquisition, our Thousand Oaks club membership may exceed 5,000."
