Last year's American League most valuable player was said to have a strained left groin, an injury that has bothered him for more than a month. But now Hamilton thinks he may actually have a sports hernia, a more serious condition that generally requires surgery to repair. Hamilton, who missed a month of the 2009 season after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia, said he hasn't had any tests to prove his theory but said the pain he's experiencing is similar to what he had two years ago. And it seems to have robbed him of his power since Hamilton, who hit 25 home runs during the regular season, has gone 68 at-bats without another.

With his recovery from a strained left hip having stalled, Dodgers infielder Juan Uribe is expected to visit a Los Angeles specialist Monday or Tuesday to determine whether he might be suffering from a more debilitating injury. Two possibilities are a sports hernia or a strained abdominal muscle, Dodgers trainer Stan Conte said, though two previous MRIs did not reveal any strain. "At some point, you need an explanation," Conte said. "We think he should be ready [to play]

PHILADELPHIA -- This is what a healthy Donovan McNabb looks like. McNabb threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, rookie DeSean Jackson had an impressive debut and the Philadelphia Eagles routed the St. Louis Rams, 38-3. McNabb was 21 for 33, including a 90-yard touchdown pass to Hank Baskett. Jackson, the first Eagles rookie wide receiver to start the season opener in 18 years, had six catches for 106 yards and returned a punt 60 yards to set up a field goal. Coming off their second last-place finish in three years, the Eagles played like a team that expects to make a championship run. The offense racked up 522 total yards and the defense was dominant.

Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere figured it was just a matter of time before injuries took a toll on the defending Stanley Cup champions, who play one of the most physical styles in the NHL. "The last couple of years, we've really been blessed as far as injuries are concerned," said Giguere, who sat out all of training camp and the first two weeks of the season after off-season surgery to repair a sports hernia. "This year, it seems like we can't stay away from them."
