Who needs Jason Kapono or Dan Gadzuric? UCLA certainly didn't Saturday, instead leaning on its supporting cast to brush aside Washington State, 75-57, at Pauley Pavilion and cruise to a Pacific 10 Conference sweep of the Washington schools and a third consecutive victory. The Bruins, who have won five of six, improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10 play. Washington State, which has never beaten UCLA in Los Angeles, dropped to 6-5 and 0-2.

A football and athletic directors clinic will be held on April 5 at Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $35 per coach. Coaches scheduled to speak include John Shacklett from Morse, Herb Meyer from Oceanside El Camino, Ron Hamamoto from Monte Vista (he's talking about defending the spread offense), Gil Warren from Olympian (practice organization), Chris Hauser from Mission Hills (building balanced offense) and Danny Gonzales from San Diego State (blitzing)

The Hawaii Rainbows simply had too many options for Illinois on Wednesday night in the Thrifty Car Rental Holiday Bowl. The Rainbows used their triple-option offense effectively in the second half to defeat the Illini, 27-17, before 44,457 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. And with the victory comes a little more respect for the Western Athletic Conference, known for its entertaining offense but lack of defense.

Matt Leinart had plenty to say Monday about the Tennessee Titans' recent hiring of Ken Whisenhunt, his former head coach with the Arizona Cardinals, on "Fox Sports Live. " And it wasn't good. "I don't think it's a great fit, and I don't think it's great timing, and here's why," said Leinart, a free agent quarterback who was cut by the Cardinals during Whisenhunt's tenure. "You look at his tenure in Arizona -- only two years, he had success, and in those two years, [quarterback]

Mike Bellotti saw the future of Oregon football almost a decade ago. The spread-option epiphany did not tap him lightly on the shoulder. "It just hit me right in the face," Bellotti, now an ESPN analyst, said this week. You can credit Oregon's former coach for making possible Saturday night's anticipated showdown of Arizona at Oregon. The game features two of the spread's most cutting-edge masterminds, Oregon Coach Chip Kelly and Arizona's Rich Rodriguez. If Rodriguez is the godfather of the offense, Kelly might be the godson.

Carson Palmer hesitated a bit walking into the USC football office last winter. He was going to meet his new boss. For the better part of three decades, Norm Chow had engineered some of the best offenses in college football, nurturing such quarterbacks as Steve Young and Jim McMahon. His hiring as offensive coordinator at USC was heralded as a coup for the Trojans. "I was nervous," Palmer said of his first encounter with Chow. "He called me in, told me to sit down." And they proceeded to talk.

USC could have been deflated. The Trojans had lost two games in a row. They spent a week absorbing blows for their defensive performance against Oregon and for using illegally deflated balls against the Ducks. And now, boos were raining down upon their sputtering offense during the first half of Saturday's game against Arizona State at the Coliseum. But No. 21 USC regrouped at halftime, got a lift from senior tailback Curtis McNeal and rode a pumped-up defense to a 38-17 victory that kept the Trojans in the hunt for the Rose Bowl.

This is the third in a series of stories looking at the top high school football players in the Southland by position. Today: Quarterbacks. With a 3.6 grade-point average and coming off a junior season in which he completed 69% of his passes, threw for 3,291 yards and 36 touchdowns and was named Gatorade state player of the year, quarterback Ryan Kasdorf of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame had every reason to believe college recruiters would be sold on...

The Cowboys haven't snapped a down yet, and they're already one of 2013's most exciting teams. Oklahoma State played with (orange and black) pants on fire last season in averaging nearly 46 points per game, but apparently it just wasn't entertaining enough for Coach Mike Gundy. "We expect to play very fast this year," he said. He ordered strength coach Rob Glass to turn up the hamster wheel to get the team in better cardiovascular shape. Oklahoma State is happy to be one of the defendants in the phony "spread offenses lead to more injuries" argument being prosecuted by Alabama Coach Nick Saban.

Bucs, Dolphins and others should take further advantage of spread offense in NFL Excuses spread thin against different offensive mind-set The best part wasn't actually watching Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown taking six direct snaps from center, running for three touchdowns and throwing for another. No, the best part was when the camera flashed to New England's sideline and showed Bill Belichick -- the poster boy for NFL arrogance and pro football's resident snooty genius -- wearing a blank, baffled expression that pretty much said, "I think I've just been snookered by a college offense."

New USC Coach Steve Sarkisian will wait until spring practice to install the up-tempo, no-huddle offense he brought with him from Washington. Trojans quarterbacks are already looking forward to it. "I'm very excited," said starter Cody Kessler, who ran a spread offense at Bakersfield Centennial High. Fellow sophomore Max Wittek operated out of a more traditional pro-style offense at Santa Ana Mater Dei, but said, "I think I can move around well and do what's asked.

Ed Orgeron coached as an assistant against Noel Mazzone several times during their long careers, including last season's game between USC and UCLA . But the 83rd game in the crosstown rivalry on Saturday presents a slightly different scenario. Orgeron is a head coach for the first time since his three-year stint at Mississippi, where he hired and then fired Mazzone as offensive coordinator after one season. Since replacing Lane Kiffin as USC's coach in late September, Orgeron has been making a push to prompt Athletic Director Pat Haden to remove the interim label.

Mike Bellotti, former head coach at Oregon, can pick out the defensive coordinator on any Pac-12 Conference football staff. "They have a very high stress rate and a lot of gray hairs," Bellotti said. The reason is clear: In 2004, there were 29 major college teams that averaged 30 or more points per game. Now there are 62. The challenge is especially difficult in the Pac-12, where a smorgasbord of offenses ranges from the tempo-obsessed spreads to the traditional meat-grinder approach.

Charisma. Intelligence. Athleticism. Toughness. Those are just a few of the qualities exhibited by junior quarterback Travis Waller of Anaheim Servite. If a coach needs a teenager to lead on and off the field, Waller is the ideal candidate. With a 3.8 grade-point average, off-the-chart physical skills and personal experiences that keep him inspired and focused, the 6-foot-3 Waller shows every sign of understanding what it takes to succeed. Moved from receiver to quarterback in the fifth game of last season, Waller has found his calling.

With one spectacular game, 6-foot-5 senior receiver Dallas Lopez of Harbor City Narbonne has thrust himself into the City Section conversation about top players. Lopez caught three touchdown passes against Palos Verdes, including the game-winning 29-yard reception as time expired in a 27-23 victory. He caught just one touchdown pass all last season as a junior at Wilmington Banning. Now playing in a spread offense that highlights its receivers, Lopez proved to be a very tough target to stop.

Oregon will be looking to continue a few trends against a UCLA team focused on ending a losing streak. What to look for in tonight's game: Uphill road: UCLA, a loser of 11 of its last 14 on the road, faces an Oregon team that rarely loses in front of its always-raucous home crowd. Run off: Each of Oregon's top two tailbacks has nearly equaled UCLA's total rushing offense. Beating the spread: We're not talking betting here, we're talking about the spread offense. And the Ducks run it well no matter who is playing quarterback.

Dennis Dixon may be considered a long shot to earn Philadelphia's starting quarterback job -- or even a spot on the team's opening-day roster -- but he does have one advantage over fellow Eagles QBs Michael Vick and Nick Foles. Not only he is the only one of the three who has played under new Coach Chip Kelly's system, but Dixon excelled in his spread offense at the University of Oregon. With Kelly as his offensive coordinator in 2007, Dixon was in the Heisman Trophy conversation -- passing for 2,136 yards with 20 touchdowns and four interceptions to go with 583 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground -- before a torn ACL ended his senior season prematurely.

EL PASO - Paul Johnson likes to keep it simple, at least on the surface. Georgia Tech's coach has run the same basic offense for nearly three decades, tinkering here, adding a few wrinkles there, though never straying far from the principles of an attack that annually produces some of the top rushing yardage totals in college football. Johnson calls it a spread option, but it includes elements of the triple option, double wing, the wing T and wishbone, morphing into what some dub the flexbone.
