Plantar fasciitis. If you haven't had to deal with it personally, just ask around. Chances are you know lots of people who can describe it in great detail: stabbing heel pain and agonizing steps followed by a frustratingly slow recovery. Plantar fasciitis - an inflammation of the plantar facsia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the arch from the heel to the toes - has become so ubiquitous that podiatrists can practically make the diagnosis before a patient even sets foot in their office.

A 23-year-old German Muslim was convicted in Frankfurt, Germany, and sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison for stabbing a rabbi in the stomach last year. Sajed Aziz was convicted of serious bodily injury in the September attack on Orthodox Jewish Rabbi Zalman Gurevitch on a Frankfurt street. But Judge Klaus Drescher said there was not enough evidence to support the original charge of attempted manslaughter. Aziz admitted he stabbed Gurevitch but called it self-defense, saying the rabbi had grabbed him by the collar.

VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. - In this rural town southeast of Sacramento, small-town neighborliness and distance from urban life made many of its 7,500 residents feel safe. Locals say many residents still don't lock their doors. But feelings of security have been shattered by the killing of an 8-year-old girl over the weekend. Authorities have revealed few details about the crime, but local media have reported that the girl's older brother told detectives an intruder got into the home while their parents were away and fatally stabbed her. Leila Fowler's slaying prompted a sweeping manhunt across the rugged terrain of Calaveras County and left residents searching for answers.

Los Angeles police said they relied heavily on students and their social media skills in tracking down and arresting a trio of suspects Thursday in the fatal stabbing of an 18-year-old at a Reseda high school. Using tweets from students, police said they were able to identify and ultimately arrest the suspects - two of them reputed gang members - in a Van Nuys neighborhood. Kevin Orellano was stabbed to death Wednesday as he was playing handball on campus, which he had attended before transferring to an occupational center last fall.

Before last May, neighbors in the upscale Ventura County community of Faria Beach didn't have much reason to think they were unsafe. On one side, they were guarded by electronic gates. On the other side, the ocean lapped at their sea walls. At low tide, strollers greeted one another on the magnificent shoreline six miles up the coast from Ventura. But on the night of May 20, an intruder walked through an open terrace door and stabbed a man and his pregnant wife to death. Their two children, ages 9 and 11, were in the house when the attacker entered.
