Lisa Dolan set a school record in the balance beam Monday in leading Cal State Fullerton to a third-place finish at a nonconference women's gymnastics meet at the University of Utah at Salt Lake City. Dolan, a freshman, received a score of 9.8, which broke the record of 9.7 set in 1983 by Julie Goewey, now an assistant coach with the Titans. Dolan also placed third overall with 37.3 in the four-way meet, and teammate Stacey Harris placed fifth with 37.15 points. Utah's Jessica Smith won with 38.

Three of the best women's gymnastics teams in the country will compete in the A'Sante Women's Gymnastics Invitational tonight at Cal State Fullerton. Five-time National Collegiate Athletic Assn. champion Utah, ranked fifth in the country, 12th-ranked Washington and 13th-ranked Fullerton make up a field that will feature some of the country's top individual performers. Utah's score of 190.75 against Arizona State earlier this season is the highest mark in the nation this year.

Cal State Fullerton gymnast Eli Rodriguez was ruled eligible Friday, just before the Titans' season opener against San Jose State. With Rodriguez, the Titans pulled off a come-from-behind, 261-258.20 victory at Titan Gym. Rodriguez was suspended after his involvement in the stabbing of a former teammate in September. He was allowed to return to practice in November but whether he would be allowed to compete was unknown until Friday. The Titans trailed entering the final event, the high bar.

Behind outstanding all-around performances by freshmen Lisa Dolan and Stacey Harris, Cal State Fullerton's 14th-ranked women's gymnastics team upset 4th-ranked Utah and 13th-ranked Washington in the A'Sante Women's Gymnastics Invitational Friday night in Titan Gym. Fullerton scored 185.40 to Utah's 184.85 and Washington's 179.65 in a battle that came down to the final event of the evening. The Titans led Utah, 139.55 to 138.45, going into the fourth rotation. Fullerton scored 45.

Vanessa Dunn of Kennedy High, Tashean Thomas of North Hollywood, Monie Simmons of Poly and Jessica Cosby of Granada Hills were among 23 players named to All-City Section girls' basketball teams by a panel of coaches. Dunn, a 5-foot-8 senior forward who averaged 16.8 points, and Thomas, a 5-4 guard who averaged 15 points and 6.5 steals, were named to the 4-A Division team. Crenshaw's Naila Mosley was named the division's player of the year.
