In what it billed as its first debut at a music festival, Toyota unveiled the refreshed 2014 4Runner SUV on Saturday at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio. Before a crowd dotted with flannel shirts and cowboy hats, and joined on stage by country star Dierks Bentley, the 2014 4Runner showed off a more aggressive style for Toyota's venerable SUV. The updated model has a more muscular front grille, bumpers and headlight design, and new LED taillights. The overall freshening gives the 4Runner a more blocky appearance, as if to reinforce that this tried-and-true SUV is not compromised crossover.

This Saturday at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio, the Mavericks will make their first bona-fide concert appearance in nearly seven years. The show by the revered and genre-defying band is being billed as a reunion and constitutes one of the marquee special facets of this year's festival in the desert. It's also a standout moment for the band, whose members are coming back together after a turbulent career run that began with a rewarding string of albums and singles in the '90s but ended in frustration when their label dropped them and the group disbanded.

Time to book a hotel room in Indio. The next Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will be April 17 to 19 and its country cousin, the Stagecoach Festival, will be the following weekend, April 25 and 26. No word on the talent lineups yet. Why is Coachella being held a week earlier next year? AEG Live, the concert promotion company that became a partner in the event in 2001, is also the corporate engine these days behind the grand old New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which will be held April 24 to 26 and April 30 to May 3. For logistical reasons the decision was made to avoid overlap.

Two faces of contemporary country music stood in striking relief at the third edition of Stagecoach, the country music festival held in Indio over the weekend. On one side, topping Saturday's bill, was Brad Paisley, a self-professed music geek who has risen to the top with an estimable string of hits built on brilliant lyric twists ("I'm Gonna Miss Her [The Fishing Song]"), the occasional bawdy double-entendre ("Ticks") and even profundity ("Whiskey Lullaby").

NASHVILLE -- Hayes Carll, 32, arranges his long limbs around a high-top table in the bar of a trendy Nashville restaurant. He's clearly out of place, but frequenting these locales comes with the new visibility he's earned as one of the most talked about emerging artists in the country arena. Rave reviews of his third full-length album, "Trouble in Mind," have cascaded in from any number of outlets, transforming this journeyman singer-songwriter with the face of a prairie dog into one of the must-see performers at this weekend's Stagecoach Festival at the Empire Polo Field in Indio.

For eight years, this tiny town in the low desert has endured an annual culture shock as thousands of young rock fans poured in for the Coachella festival. But on Saturday the tide of music tourists was a bit more in rhythm with the local landscape. They favored barbecue pits over mosh pits, and their guitar heroes wore boots and Stetsons, not sneakers and tattoos. In their campgrounds, instead of scruffy teenagers passing joints, it was a sea of shining RVs stocked with Budweiser on ice.
