Victor Kiam, New England Patriot owner, has to come up with $38 million by Oct. 10 to pay off partner Fran Murray or lose control of the NFL franchise. Under their ownership contract, if Kiam cannot produce the money, Murray will run the team with the help of the league for 120 days, during which time it would be sold. Kiam "sees no problem coming up with the money," a team spokesman said.

The Seattle Seahawks, who play the Raiders at the Coliseum on Sunday, activated quarterback Kelly Stouffer and he might start. Stouffer, after starting the first five games, dislocated his left shoulder against San Diego on Oct. 4 in San Diego. Third-string quarterback Stan Gelbaugh has started the last three games. The Seahawks (1-8) have lost six games in a row.

I know this will be of little consolation to Ram fans, but Frank Reich has been instrumental in great comebacks before. In 1984, Reich's Maryland team played sixth-ranked Miami, a team that included Melvin Bratton, Alonzo Highsmith, and, of course, Bernie Kosar. Trailing 31-0 at halftime, the Terps scored 42 second-half points with replacement Reich at the helm and won the game when they stopped a two-point conversion with seconds remaining.

Coach Bobby Ross hinted strongly that he would stay at Maryland after the Terrapins squelched Virginia's second-half comeback to beat the Cavaliers, 33-21, Friday and win their third straight Atlantic Coast Conference title. A 40-yard scoring pass from Stan Gelbaugh to Ferrell Edmunds gave the Terps breathing room early in the fourth quarter after Virginia had scored twice to pull within 23-21.
