Stan Morrison, former basketball coach at USC and Pacific, was hired Tuesday as San Jose State's new coach. Morrison signed a four-year contract that marks his return to coaching after being athletic director at UC Santa Barbara since 1986. He replaces Bill Berry, who was fired last month after a 5-21 season that was further clouded by a walkout by 10 players who claimed he verbally and physically abused them.

Mal Florence told me about an incident a few years ago: When Stan Morrison left as USC basketball coach, Mal wrote that he had been fired. Mike McGee, then the USC athletic director, had told the media that Morrison had left of his own volition. An angry McGee confronted Mal, and asked, "Who is the source of your information?" Mal replied, "Stan Morrison." Jim Lamhofer Long Beach

Congratulations to USC for pulling off the recruiting coup of the year. But Stan Morrison may be getting himself in hot water. In this town, anything less than a national championship does not spell success. JERRY ROYCE Santa Monica

What do Stan Morrison and Walt Hazzard have in common? Both were fired one year after each had won a Pac-10 basketball championship. I hope for UCLA's sake that Hazzard's successor isn't the flop that Morrison's has been. BILL LOWER Seal Beach

Stan Morrison deserves a medal for enduring the spoiled brats in the USC basketball program. This gentleman is a living example that "nice guys finish last." Could Mal Florence confirm that Daryl Gates turned down this job? BILL RETCHIN La Quinta

USC basketball Coach Stan Morrison said Wednesday that he has no intention of leaving the school to take another coaching job. It has been rumored that he was a possible replacement for Dick Kuchen at California. "I love USC," Morrison said. "I believe that the athletic administration, university administration and Stan Morrison have the same goals. I appreciate the university's earnest effort to assist me in reaching that goal, and I'm excited and pleased to be at USC. I never wanted to leave."

David Spencer was on the telephone Monday, talking about Hank Gathers, when call-waiting signaled another incoming call. It was Bo Kimble. "That was Bo and he needs me, so we have to make this conversation relatively quick," said Spencer, who recruited both Gathers and Kimble for USC, where they played their freshman seasons. Spencer was courtside at Gersten Pavilion Sunday when Gathers, a senior at Loyola Marymount, collapsed at mid-court while playing against Portland.

With Nevada Las Vegas again representing the northern-most in basketball quality, the big news in the Big West can be found at the southern end of the standings. There's a new worst team in the conference. And its name isn't San Jose State. That final score on the Bren Center scoreboard Thursday night--San Jose 75, UC Irvine 69--is for real.

A $3.6-million lawsuit against USC by its former basketball coach, Stan Morrison, was settled out of court several weeks ago, it was learned Monday. USC Athletic Director Mike McGee and Morrison's attorney, Leonard Armato, confirmed the settlement but would not comment on the terms. "Let's just say that unfinished business has become finished," McGee said. Morrison said in the suit that his contract had been breached when he was fired by McGee in March, 1986, without cause or warning.

The UCLA basketball program is in terrible shape under Coach Walt Hazzard. He can't recruit on a national basis, and he can't even recruit the top players in his own backyard. Tom Lewis, player of the year in 1985, is averaging 23 points a game at Pepperdine. Steve Thompson of Crenshaw is starting at Syracuse. Scott Williams, player of the year in 1986, is starting at North Carolina. Brian Williams of St. Monica High is starting at Maryland. Sean Higgins of Fairfax went to Michigan.

As a longtime USC basketball fan, I am very distressed about what is happening to the program. Last year, with a talented group of players waiting in the wings, everyone had high hopes for the future. The future is here and the Trojans continue to wallow in the cellar. Stan Morrison brought respect for USC basketball. George Raveling may be a great recruiter, but he has yet to prove himself as a coach. TED BASTION Santa Monica
