Many former tennis champions will compete in a new Tournament of Legends, June 9-12 on the grass courts at at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. The field for the $135,000 event includes Stan Smith, Ilie Nastase, Roy Emerson, Pancho Gonzalez, Pancho Segura, Billie Jean King and Evonne Goolagong.

Tom Gullikson is expected to be named as the new U.S. Davis Cap captain today. The United States Tennis Assn. has scheduled a news conference this morning in New York where all indications are Gullikson will be introduced as Tom Gorman's successor. Gullikson works for the USTA as a coach in the player development program, which he joined when it began in 1988, and worked with such players as Jim Courier, Todd Martin and Jennifer Capriati.

Stan Smith and Roscoe Tanner meet tonight in the first round of the 4-day Prudential-Bache Grand Champions tournament at the Rancho San Clemente Tennis Club. Grand Champions is a 35-and-over circuit for players who have won a Grand Slam event, played Davis Cup, earned more than a million dollars in prize money or were ranked No. 1 in their country. Play begins at 1 p.m. today with Colin Dibley facing Frew McMillan.

Ivan Lendl will play Vitas Gerulaitis in the Forum Championship Tennis Challenge Series tonight at the Forum. Gerulaitis, who replaced the injured Jimmy Connors, will play Lendl at 7:30 p.m. Stan Smith and Ilie Nastase play at 6 p.m. Both matches will be best of three sets. Lendl and Smith will play Gerulaitis and Nastase in an eight-game pro-set doubles match after the last singles match. The matches are a part of a $100,000 Challenge Series, with finals in April.

Stan Smith, Bob Lutz and John Lloyd highlight the field at the Prudential Bache Grand Championship at the Newport Beach Tennis Club starting today and continuing through Sunday. The Grand Championships, a circuit for players 35 and older, will feature two sessions each today, Friday and Saturday, one at noon and the second at 5:30 p.m. The final will be Sunday at 1 p.m. The Grand Championships is the eighth stop in a nine-tournament season. Bob Lutz of San Clemente and Harold Solomon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., advanced to the final of the $40,000 Prudential-Bache Grand Champions of New England tennis tournament Saturday. Lutz defeated Eddie Dibbs of Miami, 6-4, 7-5, and Solomon eliminated Tom Gullikson of Palm Coast, Fla., 7-5, 6-4, at Ocean Edge Resort and Conference Center.
